For those who mentioned - I agree using cool water on a very hot day is ok and can be cooling. These tips are focused on bathing a horse in moderate temperatures

When bathing my horses i was taught by a vet when applying water start at the hooves first and move up to the leg then neck to back. By doing this it not a temperature shock to the horses system.

Does that work for you? *I don’t mean the horse. Can you handle the cold water shower better if you do that compared to when you don’t? How much difference does it make? You should definitely see for yourself the difference is.

@@genericamerican7574 Human and horse sense of cold works differently. When bathing a horse, directly applying water of a drastic temperature (ie hot water on a cold day, or cold water on a hot day) to a spot where the horse has a lot of veins and muscles can cause temperature shock, especially if you put it on their chest/heart. Their legs are able to handle it much more easily, so it helps them get used to the water temperature and prevents a temperature shock.
@ulhi7564

@@genericamerican7574 It works for me, I'll still shout about the cold water, but it's a tad bit easier. Kind of like going swimming in a cold lake, one won't just jump in, it's much kinder to the body to first let your legs get used to the temperature

If you only have cold water you should let it run on their chest for about a minute to let them get used to it so it doesn't shock them.
@itsyoursecret22

you spray it on their legs first. NEVER just beam it straight on their chest, i’ve seen videos of it sending horses actually INTO shock. you always spray legs first, and if possible chest LAST. that is deffinitly the last place you should spray.

@@riivattu2869 but cramps are better then cardiac arrest. Trust me, it’s way better to spray a horses legs with cold water then to spray it’s chest. also, cold water reduces inflammation so i don’t understand how it would cause cramps…

My uncle ownes a stud farm. Dealing with very expensive racehorses ect. So he has a custom horse shower. Where you walk the horse through. They get a warm rinse first. Then a watered in shampoo rinse. Built-in soft brush system. Then another warm rinse before a conditioner rinse. The horses love it. Especially my stallion Freshian Horse Diablo. He will play up to stay in longer lol. My uncle also has a herd of rescue horses & ponies who also use the shower system. Its so economical. The leader of the rescue herd is Duke of Earl. A roan Shire horse. Who only just about fits in the shower. Theres 2 rescue Clydesdale called Bonnie & Clyde. They go through the shower together. As they were rescued together as ex carriage horses. They are inseperable. Now their injuries are all healed up. They get to shower whenever they want. Those 2 are 28yrs old. My uncle took them of a cruel owner after seeing them skinny an injured when driving past their field one day. He bought them home the same day. That was 7yrs ago. So they now have a happy relaxing retirement. The smallest pony is Merrylegs. He wont go in the shower. As he prefers to roll in mud lol. Yet he still gets a warm wash down when hes too caked in mud. Most dont know he has a pure white coat. When he's clean. Which is not often. Yet he is best friends with Duke. They make a funny pair. Merrylegs isnt stupid. When it rains & their outside. He stands underneath Duke to stay dry lol. Each horse or pony are such special characters. We treasure them All.
