Her face when he goes to slow down the attackers... that is the purest, most raw representation of grief and despair I have ever seen in any animated media, maybe ANY media. When contrasted with the muted expression she has at the start of the film, telling the story to 5 year old Mirabel, it's even more powerful.

I won’t ever forget the first time I saw this movie, it was in a theater in New Jersey, in a neighborhood that’s mostly latinos. I’m Latina myself (Puerto Rican/Peruvian). When the scene came up there was not a SINGLE dry eye. Theater wasn’t crowded but I heard so many people sniffing and crying. I cried too. Colombia is a beautiful country, I’m so happy this movie did such a great job portraying a Colombian family!

Abuela looks like Isabela when she was younger that's why Isabela is her favorite. And Isabela being the eldest grandchild, was expected to be the one to marry first, and Abuela wants her to marry Mariano because he resembles her late husband, Pedro. Abuela wants to live through Isabela, she wants Isabela to live the "perfect life" that she could have lived with Pedro if he did not die. Her trauma made her decide for her family not knowing it was hurting them.

This is part of our history which shaped our lives somehow. This shows "la época de la violencia"/the time of the violence or I don't know if this has any particular name in English but during this time people suffered lots and it was the nest of the next violence periods. People really grieved, I cried so much when grandma lost his husband in front of her, her face shows all the suffering of an entire country... I think Disney did a great job here, I would like someday foreigners understand this and don't just ask about Pablo Escobar and cocaine, of course not all but some of them do (there are very nice and understanding people too)... and of course I would like people stop watching narcos, that's a horrible TV series 😅, really... This is a way people can understand what happened here before just assuming who we are, thank you very much for your review.

This movie definitely made me want to learn more about Colombia. I watched it the other day and immediately ordered One Hundred Years of Solitude. I’m from the US and this song in particular made me want to learn more about our problems at our southern border. It’s hard to imagine the depths of other peoples suffering when the news reads it out like the weather. We become desensitized. This movie showed it in a very powerful but respectful way in my opinion and it definitely left an impression on me.

I've watched this video at least a dozen times, and I'm a wreck by the time Alma loses Pedro. It was weeks later that I found a site offering a translation of the lyrics, but it really didn't matter; the song could be about the village's garbage collection; it is the TONE and INTIMACY of the song contrasting with Abuela's loss and grief that distroys me. Of course, I'm bawling again as the sun rises, Abuela and Mirabel reconcile, the butterflies are sailing past, and the song breaks in again, this time bravely and with assurance. The Candle seals off the area after dispelling the horsemen, but as the butterflies sail off, a new pass between the mountains is revealed, opening the village to the world. You should also note that Abuela uses this same melody during her verse in "The Family Madrigal".

The song has a lot of meaning, especially if you are Colombian. It talks about growing up, transforming yourself, adapting and growing, especially when violence has touched your life as it has happened to all of us in Colombia. Also, for us, butterflies, especially yellow ones, are a symbol. Our Nobel Prize winning writer, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, uses them as a symbol of the resilience of the people of my country, and how we transform pain and sadness into something better and more beautiful. How we have overcome violence and pain to grow as people, as a country, and to move forward in spite of everything.

One more thing (Yes, I'm a wordy nuisance): La casita seems to intuit what everyone's natural Gift is (Luisa was probably a sturdy little girl, Isabella may have had a green thumb as a child; Antonio reportedly is "into" animals), and magically boots it. Mirabel is naturally empathic and intuitive. She wasn't DENIED a Gift; she simply didn't NEED the boost! I've come to believe that each of us has at least one Majikal Gift: Some are math whizzes, some are writers, some can dance, others can cook. If you're lucky, you discover what your Gift is; if you're clever, you develop that Gift into a talent or skill... maybe even get PAID for it; if you're wise, you don't over-reach, because even Majik has its limits.
