Licensed esthetician here. My thoughts- I think a double cleanse is perfectly acceptable as long as the products are not stripping or harsh and the user is not overly “scrubbing” their face. I always tell my clients scrubbing is for floors NOT for skin! A gentle micellar water followed by a neutral, non stripping cleanser works for most women who wear foundation and powder. I say this because in America, the trend, especially for young women, is to use heavier foundations. Many of them wear these heavier makeups on a daily basis. (Which I don’t advocate, BTW.) Just one cleanse for these women who use one of those super popular, long wearing matte foundations is NOT usually enough to remove those long wearing pigments. I tell my clients who wear these heavier foundations that a gentle a micellar water followed by a neutral non stripping cleanser is fine...just use enough cleanser and massage in for at LEAST one minute. Remember that if you have been following Dr. Sam for any length of time, she also does NOT advocate the daily use of heavy, long wearing foundations OR powder, esp if you are prone to acne. In those cases of light facial makeup, then her recommendation of ONE thorough cleanse would work on a daily basis.

Love the "scrubbing is for the floor and not for the face". Every time I see those loofah sponges or mitts in the supermarket or the drugstore in their beauty section I can't help but laugh and cringe at the same time. In the old days in China we used loofah to scrub the dishes(I still do now for eco reasons and they're wonderful for that). I can't even get my head around how can people use it for the delicate skin on their face? Really if Asian ladies have beautiful and smooth skin, besides the basic skin care, avoiding the sun, and diet, it's also because we don't use things like loofah to scrub our faces!

I am also a licensed esthetician. I just disagree with you on one point: Micellaire waters don't really do a great job at removing makeup (in my experience). They're just like wipes, honestly (good in a pinch or where you don't have a sink/better than nothing). If you're cleansing after it's probably not the end of the world, but if you're going to irritate the skin with a first cleanse anyway, it's better to have something more gentle, environmentally friendly, and more effective than a MW/wipe. I recommend that my clients don't wear a lot of makeup either, but people will do anything to cover their acne, so I understand where they're coming from. For them I recommend some kind of (gentle) double cleanse at home. Plus if you have a nice cleanser with some active ingredients, it's good to get the SPF/makeup/environmental aggressors off the skin so you can use your second cleanser as a treatment with nothing in the way.

Yeah, even if I only use sunscreen, I reapply quite often, and for me single cleanse (even 1 minute like she said) is not enough. And my sunscreen is not even water resistant So... yeah, what dr.sam said is not wrong at all when it comes to her personal routine, but it can't be applied by all of people around the world, everyone have a different activity, and for me double cleanse is the one that suit me the most

In my experience if you massage the skin for about a minute with a gentle cleanser, the stubborn sunscreen and makeup come off for sure. But if you do it for 10-20 sec it is not enough. I think you need to be conscience about how much time you spend cleansing when you do single cleanse.

A gentle double cleanse won't be the end of the world. >.< A lot of dermatologists recommend double-cleansing anyway, especially if you're wearing/reapplying a lot of sunscreen or makeup throughout the day. It's just most important to get everything off. She's actually the only derm I've heard not recommending a double cleanse. Sometimes I get the rare cleanser that will take off everything in one go, but it really depends on the cleanser I'm using. If I'm using something really gentle like La Roche Posay Toleriane or Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser, I do have to do a double cleanse by going in with my Makeup Eraser first.

I feel that a good oil based first cleanser is really needed to break apart the water resistant sunscreen and long wear foundation and concealer. Double the amount of of cleanser would be enough if you wear very little to no makeup. Just my opinion.

i sometimes double cleanse sunscreen with oil cleanser + facewash thoroughly, and i still see some traces of sunscreen in areas on my face, particularly if i didn't shave for a day, it sticks on the beard area. Mineral sunscreen in particular. Sunscreen really sticks to the skin, especially if you reapply once or twice throughout the day (not even a full layer, but just like 1/3 of the base layer).

A capite ad calcem I’ve tried that la Roche Posay one and thought it was pretty useless for me. I bought it because I was waiting for my regular cleanser to apply. I don’t wear foundation, just sunscreen, concealer and mascara. It did not remove any make up at all. Was so thankful to see my usual cleanser arrive in the mail. My skin felt so dry and stripped having to go in with micellar water, then the toleraine.

I’ll tell you double cleansing has recently become popular and I’ve been doing it to remove sunscreen as I don’t wear makeup as a guy. I used one cleanse for about 20 years and it worked fine. I actually think double cleansing is just too much for my skin lately. I like her method too and it makes sense in my experience. I also like the technique of washing your face with out a bunch of water at first applying the cleanser and using it almost dry to massage in and get the full benefit of its ingredients. Then adding the water to emulsify.

I'm Sorry! But If I used that much product on my face. I would look like some crazy greasy sticky faced woman. No amount of rubbing in would work. And giving it time to sink in wouldn't work either. I have such oily skin, within 15 minutes I'm producing oil. And that just pushes product out. If I used that much eye cream I'd end up with sore and swollen eyes. I do only wash once in the morning. But in the evening when I'm taking off makeup. I use a Cleansing Milk first. Then Face Wash. Then The Ordinary Glycolic Acid Toner. The Toner always manages to find something that the Cleansing Milk and Face Wash missed.

Hi, Dr Sam. I really enjoyed this video, but I'm a bit confused. You say to use a quarter teaspoon of SPF on your face here. I watched a similar video of yours recently, from at least a year ago talking about measurements. For a quarter teaspoon, do you mean 1.25 ml? Because I think you mentioned using 5 ml, which is a full teaspoon. Could you clear my doubts, please? Thank you!

Alice dsouza If it’s the niacinamide, unfortunately, this ingredient usually breaks me out as well. However, for me, it tends to happen within a day or two of starting a leave-on product with niacinamide in it. Sadly, I seem to have this problem with concentrations anywhere from 2% to 10% 😔. I don’t have any issues with wash off products though.

Some people break out for some time then their skin gets better (purge), and for others it's just not compatible and therefore can't use it. I've also seen many comment that when they decreased the amount they used, so using only 2 or 3 drops max, they stopped breaking out and reaped the benefits.

A little tip that may help which works for me: I'm assuming you're referring to The Ordinary 10% Niacinimide? What I do, because it is a high-strength niacinimide formulation, is that I mix it/dilute it with another water-based serum. Ie. I mix my regular amount of the Buffet serum with only half the amount of niacinimide, mix it between my fingers and then apply to face and neck; in essence, diluting the niacinimide to half strength. Just as an example, 5-6 or so drops of Buffet with 2 or 3 drops of niacinimide. it's called "cocktailing", but it wouldn't be okay with every serum/product.

Eh, more cleanser does not clean skin make. Try this approach and then go in and swipe your face with a toner and a pad and see how much was left behind. The KIND of cleanser matters, not just the amount. If you’re not breaking down the product first you can swirl as much cleanser as you like, go ahead and use the whole bottle’s worth, you won’t be cleaning effectively. The “one amount fits all” approach to applying products is an awful take to have. Active products have been very carefully formulated with exact percentages of ingredients per unit of volume. They recommend application amounts for a very good reason. If I used this much of my active ingredients on my face my skin would be so irritated I’d need to visit a dermatologist or an aesthetician for emergency help. Good, lord. What was this mess of a video?
