@aaronlopez5163
10 ай бұрын
It is cumbersome and is incredibly restrictive but it’s on purpose. The restricted movement is meant to encourage tight control over how the blade moves and where you want to move where the blades can be the most effective. I interpret the style is instead of your blades being an extension of your arm you become the physical body for the blades to move. The tightness of the double ended blade also requires an incredible amount of control over your own body it’s like deadlifting sideways every time you move the blade. Once you’ve mastered controlling two blades at once handling a single blade becomes practically second nature.

@Iwillfigureoutanamelater

Fun fact: Vader hated the double bladed saber because he believed it was nothing but a "trick" to intimidate an opponent since the opponent still can only swing with one side at a time you deal with it the same as a single bladed saber but an inexperienced duelist would be caught off by the two blades.
@michaelcherokee8906
Жыл бұрын
Well then Vader was a freaking moron, because the biggest advantage to a bladed staff is that one of the business ends of your weapon is always within 50% of your movement range of your opponent, no matter what orientation it is in. When both blades are ignited, it is literally impossible for your double bladed lightsaber to ever be any more than a 90 degree rotation away from hitting your opponent. With swords, that is FAR from true. Swing a sword 180 degrees, itll most likely be somewhere behind you. Swing a double bladed lightsaber that far and youre hitting your opponent with THE OTHER BLADE.
@FerunaLutelou
Жыл бұрын
@@michaelcherokee8906 one of the business ends is also pointing your way a significant amount of time. Besides that there is almost always a gap in your defence at the handle and your movement is quite restricted with both blades active. You also have a range disadvantage because you can't extend your arms as much with both blades active. You could switch the blade off and back on again, over and over, but that's quite inconvenient, dangerous and would be much less effective than only sometimes turning the second blade on, which isn't all that great either, especially if you use a long handle like Maul does which basically screams at the opponent "be careful, got a second blade". At this point the saberstaff indeed just becomes a trick, as described by Vader, and you do have to deal with only one blade at any time. Not saying that tricks are useless or that saberstaff doesn't have its own advantages and uses, but its not a very good weapon for 1v1 saber duels as a staff. While I hate Disney and think that Feloni has lost his mind or sold out his soul, I have to admit that the saber design used by Ezra in Rebels would be an improvement upon a standard saber, especially if it were capable of firing while the blade is active. Not only is it a very good trick that doesn't put you at a disadvantage even if it fails, it also allows you far more control over the opponent's movement. They can't disengage and turn their back to you to run at full speed for a better position, because you could just gun them down. If the blaster in the hilt could fire while the blade is on, it would significantly restrict your opponents movement, cause you could simply shoot them while your blades cross.
@cheesestyx945
Жыл бұрын
@@FerunaLutelou The double lightsabers main advantage in 1 v 1 combat is if you block the first strike the secound can come much quicker because you'd normally do a 180 swing to hit with the same blade but it's only a 90 degree turn with the double each time so strikes come possibly twice as fast as they would normally. Also the gun lightsaber is just a trick because there is something that does the job a lot better... an actual lightsaber and an actual blaster, it been seen throughout history with things like the gun sword it functions as both but not as well as a normal sword and a normal gun.
@FerunaLutelou
Жыл бұрын
@@cheesestyx945 you do realise that gunblades sucked specifically because they were one-n-done and because they were difficult to make, right? Having a saber in one hand and a gun in the other is FAR WORSE than having both in one weapon. And no, it's not really a trick, but a natural evolution of this kind of weapon, because it allows for superior control over the opponent's blade while you are free to move as you wish and have additional avenues of attack with NO DOWNSIDES for yourself. It's literally "lightsaber, but better". The saberstaff, however, has numerous disadvantages as I've already stated earlier. Yes, you can, in theory, maybe, strike twice as fast, but your effective reach is almost halved, your movements are more restricted, and again, pointing out this very important flaw, the standard saberstaff design has zero, I repeat, ZERO protection at the area of the handle. Your opponent doesn't NEED to defend themselves when you try to strike them from the other side, all they need to do is aim for the handle which is left unprotected when you are performing your second attack with the other blade. Another reason why targeting the handle is better than blocking the attack from the second blade is because it's closer than the incoming blade. Finally, I'm going to challenge the misconception that you can somehow do twice as many attacks with a saberstaff in a duel. You see, if we were talking about dual wielding, that would be logical that you can make twice as many attacks / attack twice as fast. With a saberstaff, however, you have only one blade being an actual threat to the enemy. Now, what takes more time and effort, changing the position of the blade that is already near the enemy, or to bring the other blade all the way to the enemy? Obviously the second one takes way more time and effort. So the real advantage here is not how fast you can attack, but how fast you change which side you're attacking from, and how hard can you hit (thanks to greater leverage of a longer handle). The first advantage is miniscule, because you can do the same thing with a single blade, arguably in even less time (go check out historic Longsword techniques), while the advantage in power of the strikes comes at a tradeoff of significantly lower defensive capabilities I've already stated earlier (that gap in defence at the handle is no joke).
@cheesestyx945
Жыл бұрын
@@FerunaLutelou both are better versions than a normal lightsaber. A saberstaff is still better because you don't need the other half on. Normal lightsabers dont have hand protection either and Sorry but the metal on the gun lightsaber wouldn't hold up if it was struck by a lightsaber either. Yes you do still need to block the strike because even if you do cut their lightsaber in half depending on where you hit they can either complete the strike and kill both of you or the lightsaber that was going for the kill is now spinning around wildly because you didn't cancel its momentum and it will end up killing you. If you know proper dual wielding technique which is remove one blade while striking with the other then yes it literally is twice as fast but that's essentially what you're doing anyway with a saberstaff. The main problem with a blaster lightsaber is the blaster is at a fixed point relative to the lightsaber if I simply have a blaster in my off hand no matter what bind position I have with the enemy I always have the opportunity to shoot them, whereas the blaster lightsaber has plenty of binds where it isn't possible to hit the enemy because it's connected to your lightsaber and it would be especially bad if they knew it was a blaster lightsaber. A lightsaber and blaster in off hand has all the advantages and more. If I'm completely honest a better design would a lightsaber like staff with a beskar spear at one end but normal saberstaff is still an improvement but they're Jedi so they can handle two lightsabers.

I really like Cal's lightsaber because, like you said, it can be a double bladed when you want it to be. He can also split and switch it as well to dual weild, he can even make it crossgaurd. I alwayd thought about having a lightsaber like that if I had one because it's good to be able to switch how you fight so you are good for the situation.

@@TheUncivilizedNation I think it's not so much the fact that your lightsaber might be cut in half and break, but the fact that you can't protect against the opponents saber with that part, so you basically have a point as wide as your body that the opponent could just cut right through and hit your body.

something ive always liked with double bladed lightsaber fighting is that it sometimes looks more like its being wielded like a bostaff and less like a traditional slashing weapon which makes sense, its a lightsaber, its just a tube of hot hot stuff so instead of trying to slash through someone, just hit em with it

For Darth Maul in particular that actually makes sense too because the actor of Darth Maul is actually a martial artist instructor who is a Bo Staff master and he has said in an interview that he could simply adapt a lot of Bo Staff techniques for the role.

There are explanations showing how lightsabers do indeed have somewhat of an "edge". Also why force sensitive people could only use it effectively, knowing where the edge of their Saber is, since it creates strong magnetic forces and interacts with the environment (magnetics of a planet or magnetic metals in the vacinity) will cause the "edge" to pull sideways and force users could compensate. This is shown in the horrible sequels mostly when untrained Rey fought Kylo and the blades just bounce off everything. Also in Mandolorian with the Darksaber being extremely unwieldy to untrained users.

Actually you would need edge alignment on a lightsaber believe it or not. In the earlier movies the Jedi were able to easily cut right through things like soft butter. However in the later movies with Luke or Rey, the lightsaber seems to be more blunt and used like a bat. The only explanation is that yes there is an edge on lightsabers but it’s really hard to see due to the sheer amount of light coming out from the saber. Obviously in the older movies the Jedi using the sabers were really experienced and could align the edge on instinct unlike the newer movies where they aren’t as experienced with the edge.

Lightsabers canonically are almost impossible for normal people to swing around.. they’re heavy and in order for the gyroscope and other mechanisms to work you have to be force sensitive and it’s also heavy asf to hold.. basically??? If you are able to master even one lightsaber stance as a non-force sensitive without sustaining any damage to yourself you would be the biggest badass this universe has ever seen realistically

It's weird how many people use the double blade with the same hand placement as a single blade. You have both your hands facing the same way, as if there was a primary blade and a secondary blade. Maul never once held it that way when using both blades. Both your hands should be facing each other. The grip is the same as how you'd grip bicycle handlebars

Probably they could also invent a thing that turns off the saber momentarily as it's passing over the user, to prevent injury. Like how in WWI they invented the interrupter for their machines guns so they could stop shooting off their own propeller
