I agree it's against the spirit of Judo to go to any national or international tournament when you show up and decide not to fight on the mat

You get a shido! And you get a shido! I'd start looking underneath my chair for some shido for me as well, if I was in the audience.

Yeah. I agree, but the matte gets the, obviously visual, action going again. Not everyone like watching newaza....unfortunately.

this was already in the 3rd minute of golden score, so they've gone 6+ minutes like that...

@@Jiyukan yes, if there's no action whatsoever for 6 minutes I don't have any attention left for it. Neither does the TV crew, stopping judo from getting much coverage. And that's coming from someone who did judo for 25+ years. A long match can be exciting (e.g. lots of Olympic matches went into overtime this year), but very few people have patience for a stalling match where none of the contestants are in it to win something.

My guess is that the fighters punched each other. Punching is generally against judo rules, and I think they repeatedly punched each other, which is more than just a "shido" warning. They should have either thrown, or grabbed, not punched. So the referee slapped a hansoku make on both judokas, and disqualified both!!!!
