Dual-purpose livestock is a traditional system oriented to the production of meat and milk, which is advanced with mestizo animals commonly obtained from crosses between zebu (bos indicus) and breeds specialized in milk such as the guir, norman, brown swiss, simbrat, the guirolando, which are the most used breeds for dual purposes, especially in the lowland tropics. In the foothills of the eastern plains, a region with a marked livestock tradition, dual-purpose herds with successful results have been highlighted, as is the case of the Bonanza farm in the municipality of Cumaral Meta, Humberto Mahecha, a zootechnician and rancher with vast experience in this livestock system, he tells us about his beginnings in dual purpose, the management he implemented, and also the agro-environmental and zootechnical conditions necessary to introduce and adopt dual purpose livestock.
