I for one am all for the "meaningless personalization" that any given game might include, for the same reason that people (including myself) enjoy games with variable player powers, variable boards, even a variable number of turns/rounds in a game. It's makes it just that much more interesting and refreshing to play a game I know when I've got a different module to try or strategy to end the game on my terms or even just representing a different character! Love the idea (:

100%! I mean, I'm even happy when there are fun component colors to choose from. 😅

Great video. Yes, an easy thing to do that can go a long way to help people have a better experience. Looking forward to learning more about this design, looks really good!

Thanks man! You're exactly right--just a little something extra that can be added to a design if it fits. This game's been on the shelf for a long time (definitely had some problems I need to work through). I should do a deeper dive into it in a future video--maybe reignite the flame. 😄

This is used in The pursuit of happiness with the relationship cards. One side is female, and the other male, both with the same stats. Also with the employment card, on side might have "statistician" and the othe might have "neuroscientist"

Being honest from the title of the video I thought that by diversity you would talk about let's say the different mechanics that can be implemented or mixed in a game, as in the case of yours it is cards and dices, and by inclusion I thought it was about how easy it is to play or understand, since if a game is very elaborate or complicated, not everyone could play it, and of course always keeping in mind that the game is fun. In my experience playing with others, things like a character's appearance or gender aren't really important outside of the artistic aspect. Yes, people may laugh at Grandma Frog at first, but the laughter ends when Grandma is the one who is winning 😁. Even so, the theme of the video is quite interesting to me, as is the development of your game.

Fair points. (And yes, it definitely works both ways--some people want to dominate as Grandma Frog, like how I like dominating as a penguin in King of Tokyo! 😜) Thanks for checking it out!

Yeah I wouldn't want to play as Grandma frog either. LOL 😅 If you're familiar with Marvel Champions at all, they actually have double sided hero cards (an alter ego, and hero form). Maybe you can play around the idea of "upgrading" your cards and flipping them from their tier 1 side to an "upgraded" tier 2 side that can have better stats and maybe add extra dice to a card to make it stronger. Anyway, excited to see the end result of your game!

Heh, I've actually been playing around with character cards that you "flip to upgrade" (or "flip to change status") in another game I'm workign on 😊... With this one though, I really wanted to experiment with "meaningless" personalization--such a small change to add that adds for more fun (especially since I wasn't using the backside anyway). Thank you so much for watching! :)

It might be that it's not implemented more, because it costs more.

It's possible. In some cases though, games are already using double-sided player boards with no real difference to them... (Or worse, just has something random printed on the back.) So theoretically, it wouldn't make a difference from that regard. I guess paying for more art would cost more though.

@BoardGameCasualChannel the difference is those may already use art assets available. Doing two different illustrations doubles the cost of art.

@@dragonlance6027 Yeah, that’s exactly what I meant by paying for more art.

Villagers is a neat card game where the basic cards are double-sided like this, but the other cards need to be shuffled. It is a thoughtful detail, but definitely makes the game better. Also, wtf is going on with some of the comments?

Why are we trying to add diversity and inclusivity to board games? Do board games need a left wing moral lesson? Its fine to have double sided male and female cards such as in Roll Player, but doing it for reasons of "inclusivity and diversity" is nothing more than contrived virtue signalling and also feeds the "I'm a victim because I wasn't represented" narrative. My recommendation is to keep moral lessons and politics out of the gaming industry.

You'll never be inclusive enough, let the game dictate the avatars. Otherwise every game you design will be anyhropomorphic animals ... In spaaaaaaace.

Are you going to accommodate every single relatable characteristic? Because once you start a diversity push, somebody who is part of a group that is not represented is going to gripe that they cannot find any character with which to relate! Sure, you have male/female cards. So progressive! It's hilarious you think that's what diversity is. Both of the characters are white! So, you actually need two double-sided cards, one for white male and female, the other for black male and female. But, wait! What about gays, trans, all the other races, body types, cultures, religions, disabilities, etc.? This might be cost-prohibitive, and if your game doesn't sell well, you just wasted a lot of time and money. Just create the characters based on your setting, and let the gamers game. If you really want to go down this path, you could make additional packs of cards with all those varieties of human-types, or you could provide a library of printable files that cover every combination of characteristic which could then be printed to card-type and sleeved. So long as you have a card representing an African-Italian, overweight, trans female Buddhist with one leg... Good luck with that.

Heh, I feel your pain. Is this the be-all end-all of solving how to make everyone feel included?--Of course not. This is just a simple idea that helps give players some choice in a character they might relate to more. 🙂 (And anecdotally speaking, during playtests, this is a great way to get your game off on the right foot with playtesters with a little more "oomph" of excitement. ☺) Thanks for checking it out!
