I did this same thing with a 90's model Vari-Drive mower, I also bought a 3" longer than stock belt (stock is 53, I bought 56) and it worked perfect, despite being an older and different setup. Swapped on a v-twin, bypassed the governor and it will go 15 MPH before the valves float. Cheap and effective, I want to try a torque converter on the crank pulley!

Grade 8 bolts are made to hold things together, fastening one thing to another. They are not made for shear strength.. they will snap when the shear force is too high where as a grade 5 bolt will bend and flex before it breaks. Most people think a grade 8 or hardened bolt is the best you can get and you should use them in place of a grade 5 if you need something stronger and that’s just not the case unless they are being used to fasten one thing to another.

By flipping the front pulley, the deck would only turn half as fast, so you wouldn't want to use it to mow the grass any more. Looks like you could have flipped the intermediate pulley (the one at 8:20) instead and gotten the same result. And then you could still use it with the deck on it. Of course, if you have no intention of using it to mow the grass, you could _still_ flip that second pulley, and get even *_more_* speed out of it.

@@dionbecker3496 you need to put a solid live rear axle in it and run a separate transmission. Are any of your tractors automatic? I would like to swap the pulley on Mine since we don't have a lawn. It has just a forward and reverse on the right floor board. Do you just use the left side with the brake/clutch for a gas pedal?
@chud327

I had one, but then made it a manual. The right pedals now do nothing.. thanks for watching.

why was the larger pulley wheel you swapped to there in the first place? Did the manufacturers design it like that so this swop could be done?

The larger pulley used to spin a mower deck, but that rusted away... Thanks for watching.

why didn't you use a set screw instead of drilling the crank for a through bolt?
@chud327

good idea, but I doubt the set screw would hold tight enough. thanks for watching.

Use a hand throttle. You can use a brake handle from a bicycle. Just mount it to the steering wheel and have fun

Could you not have used the existing keyway instead of drilling the shafts? Perhaps it is not broached all the way on the Pulley shaft. Wheelie Bars next?
@chud327

It is only on one end of the pulley shaft, I guess they don't want people doing this too easy. Thanks for watching and maybe on the wheelie bars.

I think it would be more aerodynamic if you put the angle iron under the frame rather than having it outside. Thataway you won't catch your flip flop on it when you lose another wheelie. Thanks for the fun!

my one rider, if the mower deck is off (like in this video) if I stand on the back of the rider, it will lift the front off the ground some, so it does not take a lot, with something like this with a very high center of gravity...very fun!

Hey Chud, great video. I have a question, maybe you can help me, Coincidentally, I recently changed the drive belt and I don't know if that will be the cause of my problem, I have a Troy bilt pony (2011), now I can only control the speed with the throttle lever, even when I put it in rabbit mode the motor goes at high rpm, but the ground speed is about half the normal speed; the (yellow on mine) speed control lever doesn’t work, it goes up and down without locking the notches, offers no resistance and does nothing. (however, the engaging of the parking brake action works fine). I opened up the mower and saw the yellow speed control lever attached to a connecting rod which is attached down there to the cupped metal piece in the correct position as the new Troy Bilt Pony I saw yesterday at Home Depot, but besides allowing to be put in in park position, I don’t see it attached to anything else, is it right? How does it regulate the speed if it is not connected to anything else? Thank you in advance.
