I do run back to back days, but they are both easy and one is short. Mon Easy, Tues Easy, Thurs Speed, Sat Long. It works with me, my main goal is to remain consistent and therefore not get injured. If I can consistently train, then I will grow more than if I push myself and get hurt. Some runs I don't feel tired, but as it was said at the end, it's about time on feet.

Thank you for this short , yet informative segment. Answered my questions about switching my long runs on the weekends, also I do tend to run some of my longer runs on tired legs as I work nightshift and do my runs before going home. Since starting the Comrades program for this year, I have done my utmost to keep to the sessions. My only concern now is , whether I am doing enough hill work for Comrades. Trying not to feel too nervous on this.

I always figured the logic of back to back long run is simply that ligament/tendon heal slower. By going back to back, your muscles are still sore, so you won't be able to push your pace to a damaging level to joints. If you run every other day, your muscles are fine but not the tendons, so you go fast, and you get injured.

My understanding is that running two base runs increases mitochondrial efficiency, but attenuates the mitochondrial count adaptations. If that is correct, it makes a very big factor in deciding whether to double base run.

Excellent segment! There are a number of times I've had to do back to back runs. I think the key is probably listening to your body.

I can definitely vouch for the back-to-back easy-pace long runs. This year I wanted to smash my half-marathon PB and so I tried something I hadn't done before, and that was to introduce mid-week back-to-back long runs (18km each). I incorporated these at approx. 70% into my training season, so my aerobic base was already well established and I was confident my injury risk was low. Within 2 weeks I already saw the benefits when I did my race-pace run at the end of the week, and come race day, I could feel the immense benefits of doing this, especially as I didn't experience the late-stage tiredness I felt in previous attempts.

This is one of the reasons the Kenyans are so good. From an early age, they run to school and back, something like 7 miles to then 7 miles from. Doing that 5 or 6 days a week is a mileage base of at least 70 mpw. Doing that consistently might yield better results than one 20 mile run and 1 day runs the rest of the week totaling an additional 20 miles.

Being in my 50's I no longer run back to backs, instead I'll run and then, on tired legs, cycle. I'll never, as many training plans dictate, cycle and then run. Why? The risk of injury when running fatigued is much greater than when cycling fatigued. What are your thoughts folks?

Totally agree, I just ran 2 times per week and I have ran several marathons and ultras. Never got injured. I saw people running more and more non-stop and they finally have to stop because of injures. We need to take care of the run addiction that is so powerful

Agreed also. I have run for over 15 years, pretty much never missing more than 2-3 weeks off in that entire time. Yet I have never had any injuries, despite running long distances on some very technical forest trails. I run 2-5 times a week, depending on my body and how much I’ve been doing. If I feel any intense pain or fatigue I do not run. On my “off” days I do walk several miles, easy walks in trails usually. I roller skate also but I am very careful to avoid knee injuries and twisting kinds of injuries. It’s really about balance and reading your own body. Sometimes i push myself very hard, but then the rest of the week I will not push it too much, until my muscles have recovered fully.

There is nothing wrong with cycling then running tbh. Triathletes (myself included) do it all the time 🙂

I am a beginner run and run between 1.5 and 2 kms 3 or 4 times a day . Is this physiologically as good as say one 6 or 7 km run. I keep in zone 2 though sometimes slip into zone 3. I am trying to build up my distance.
