Thanks for posting this clip. It brought back memories of seeing the original onstage. Folks, you have to see this play onstage. It will thrill and provoke and astound you.

No one can say which performance is better, but I for one can decide that the priest here is way hotter! LOL

The only reason the acting comes off as cheesy and hammy is because we're watching it up close, on video. Film acting is typically supposed to be taken several notches down from the acting of live theater. Also, I thought Streep completely hammed it up in the film, and Hoffman was far too creepy as Flynn. Hoffman's performance had "pedophile" written all over it.

It was meant to have pedophile written all over it. That's what this is all about.

It's astounding how different her performance is from Cherry Jones' performance.

I'm sorry but Meryl Streep puts her to shame, she makes this looks like a highschool production

She plays it more sly and religiously conflicted than Meryl did. Meryl took a more confrontational approach, more adjacent to Cherry Jones' performance

yeah, Meryl Streep, what an amateur. all fourteen of those oscar nominations were mistakes i guess? i, for one, loved cherry jones but i'm thrilled streep is playing the part in the film.

I agree. Unfair to judge Eileen from such a brief clip but I saw Cherry Jones and it was jaw dropping. I'm very afraid of the film version with Meryl Streep.

A nun suspects a priest molested an altar boy. But did he? That's the plot.

First of all, thank you for responding in a rational fashion. Sometime these internet exchanges can become a bit shrill. I actually agree to disagree. I think it is boiling down to that I am not a fan of her 'later' work. I guess she is relevant to those who enjoy her. I think we will both agree that as an interviewee, person, humanitarian she is first rate. I am not knocking her from a place of venom but sheerly from my personal response to her most recent work.

My aren't we defensive? MShehas 2 Oscars. Probably around 14 nominations. I am of the opinion that awards are questionable and due to the whims, prejudices of the judges. I believe that Meryl Streep was phenomenal in 'Sophie's Choice' but that was 20+ years ago. Ms. Streep has no shortage of accolades or plum roles. I just think it would be interesting to give Cherry Jones a chance to recreate possibly her greatest role onscreen. As for Meryl in "Prairie Home Companion" & "Mamma Mia?" Hmmm.
