Compost goes through 4 different Composting Stages and 3 different Management Phases
Stage 1 is the Mesophilic 1 Stage where the compost pile is newly built and compost is first coming up to heat. This is Management Phase Rapid Decomposition.
Stage 2 is the Thermophilic Stage, Management Phase 1 where compost is hot enough for long enough and will also go through the turning process to expose fresh material to the hot center, aerate the materials, and adjustments in moisture take place. Dynamic Nitrogen materials are also used up and sequestered by the rapidly multiplying biology (the source of heat). Still in Management Phase Rapid Decomposition.
Stage 3 is Mesophilic 2 Stage, Management Phase where the High-Nitrogen materials have been used up and stabilized and rapid reproduction has greatly slowed down. High temperatures can no longer be maintained and temperatures start to fall. The pile has ran out of fuel. Temperatures can no longer be maintained and drop below 131F. This is Management Phase Cooling.
Stage 4 is the Maturation Stage. In the maturation stage temperature is now at Ambient, moisture is maintained at a lower level, the compost is moved to its final resting place and disturbance is minimized to promote fungal development. It is now safe to add worms to help complete the composting process. This is Management Phase Maturation.
