He was THE face of america for the Philippines. Even after the war, he was the idealized american; brave, brilliant, and a promise-keeper. My country was almost bypassed by the US armed forces and would've probably endured oppression and massacres until the actual surrender of Imperial Japan. His insistence on invading saved tens of thousands of american and filipino POWs and civilians.

Pat Aherne That was the Manila Massacre you're talking about I believe, the americans weren't able to get to the capial that quickly since they started from places in Visayas and Mindanao ( the two lower landforms under Luzon which contains Manila) and the japanese saw it coming so they massacred 100,000 people so that when the americans get there, there was nothing to save. Manila was to be rebuilt under President Manuel Roxas to have a debt to the USA of $600 Million USD in the order of the Parity Rights. That was called the Manila Restoration Program.

If MacArthur had done his job to defend the Philippines properly in 1941, there wouldn't been a need to re-take the Philippines at great costs to the Filipinos and Americans years later. MacArthur was appointed Field Marshal of the Philippines 5 years before the Japanese invaded. He had time to know the country and train up an army. General Marshall shipped him two armored battalions consisting of 108 M3 Stuart tanks form San Francisco 3 months before the Japanese invasion. He had more tanks than the Japanese invasion force. He just didn't know how to make use of his superiority in armor. He had 35 B17s, the most advanced bombers at the time, and 107 Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighters. Radar was installed at Iba Field airbase and it did give him early warning of approaching Japanese planes on the day the Japanese attacked. Pearl Harbor had also given him ample warning to expect incoming Japanese attacks. Despite all these, he still got caught and failed to lead his men to expel an inferior Japanese invasion force. Any other general would have been dismissed for incompetence but MacArthur had good connection to the US military hierarchy and got away with it.

MacArthur's speech when returning to the Philippines: "People of the Philippines I have returned. By the grace of Almighty God our forces stand again on Philippine soil - soil consecrated in the blood of our two peoples. We have come, dedicated and committed, to the task of destroying every vestige of enemy control over your daily lives, and of restoring, upon a foundation of indestructible, strength, the liberties of your people. The hour of your redemption is here. Your patriots have demonstrated an unswerving and resolute devotion to the principles of freedom that challenges the best that is written on the pages of human history. I now call upon your supreme effort that the enemy may know from the temper of an aroused and outraged people within that he has a force there to contend with no less violent than is the force committed from without. Rally to me. Let the indomitable spirit of Bataan and Corregidor lead on. As the lines of battle roll forward to bring you within the zone of operations, rise and strike. Strike at every favorable opportunity. For your homes and hearths, strike! For future generations of your sons and daughters, strike! In the name of your sacred dead, strike! Let no heart be faint. Let every arm be steeled. The guidance of divine God points the way. Follow in His Name to the Holy Grail of righteous victory!"

MacArthur's bravery is documented and something that anyone no matter what their viewpoint cannot effectively challenge. This and the fact that his battle plans were designed to be as protective of his men as possible are what made him great in my eyes. Yes there were exceptions but for the most part he didn't have as many casualties as Patten or other generals. Though no one's record is perfect and one can find holes if they look long enough and hard enough a case can be made that at least in recent times MacArthur was America's greatest general. You read about rare instances of men distinguishing themselves in battle but as a young soldier MacArthur over and over again showed that he was completely unafraid. You won't see his like again.

Best American General I’m my opinion. As a Chinese American, I had my issues with him. He let too many Japanese War Criminals off the hook. But then again, I’m not blind that Japan was needed to sure up counter communist expansion in Asia. When Washington totally disrespected Chiang Kai-Shek in Taiwan, he stood by him. Without his support during Taiwan Strait Crisis, Taiwan very likely would’ve been lost to Red China. He wanted a top General from Chinese Nationalists Army to help him in Korea, but was denied by Truman. General Sun Lijen,, graduate of VMI, recipient of Knight Commander of British Empire; would’ve help him tremendously in Korea. General Sun has never lost a battle to Japanese or Chinese Communist. PLA General Peng Derhui would’ve have his hands full if UN force was under General Sun and MacArthur knew it.

General Douglas MacArthur remains one of my personal fave heroes. He was a great strategist, and while Washington DC rarely appreciated his skills (unless it politically served their agendas, especially during the Korean War), he was and remains a hero in the Philippines and Japan. He was even cited in the 1990 edition of Guinness World Records as the Most Highly Decorated American Military Officer of all time. Even the British military admired his skill as a strategist in World War II. Had he been given a free hand and not micromanaged in his conduct of the Korean War- and, had Truman showed the same level of spine as Franklin D. Roosevelt did during World War II, never agreeing to a compromise with the enemy, Korea would most likely have been Unified, Red China not an annoyance today, and the Viet Nam War may never have happened.

I had read that though he was guest of honour at McArthur’s wedding he caused a scandal by prophesying its demise. The allocation of full length mirrors in married quarters was just one. No mention of possibly his greatest wartime victory; Inchon. Even that was eclipsed by his suzerainty of Japan. The potential was there for Japan to decline irreversibly. It did not, and McArthur must take some credit for that.
