Here are the formatted instructions for using the terminal to check for MySQL on Mac after downloading and installing it: (You can copy this into a Word Document to make it easier to work with)
• Open the terminal app on your Mac.
• If you prefer using a different terminal app, you can use that instead.
• Test the installation by running the command mysql to open the MySQL interactive shell.
• If you see the error "command not found," it means the command is not recognized.
• To resolve this, we need to configure the terminal to recognize the MySQL program.
• Open the file ~/.bash_profile in the terminal. You can type or copy-paste the following command: open ~/.bash_profile.
• If the file doesn't exist, create it by running the command touch ~/.bash_profile.
• Once the file is open, add the following line at the bottom:
export PATH=/usr/local/mysql/bin
• Save and close the file.
• Open a new terminal window to apply the changes.
• Type mysql again. This time you may encounter an "access denied" error, which is a good sign.
• To log in as the root user, use the command mysql -u root -p and press Enter.
• It will prompt you for the password you set during the installation.
• Enter the password (characters will be hidden while typing) and press Enter.
If the password is correct, you should see a different prompt indicating you are in the MySQL shell.
• To exit the MySQL shell, type quit; and press Enter.
It is recommended to keep the terminal window open with the MySQL prompt throughout the course, allowing you to run various commands and revisit it as needed. The command mysql -u root -p will be useful for logging in as the root user.
