Plumes of smoke rose from the 120-year-old Windsor Hotel on Garry Street in downtown Winnipeg on Wednesday afternoon, contributing to a smoggy and smelly atmosphere. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service platoon chief Brent Cheater said around mid-afternoon first responders successfully suppressed the flames and stopped them from spreading to neighbouring buildings like Extendicare Beacon Hill Long-Term Care Home, which shared the back lane with the Windsor Hotel.
"There was heavy black smoke being drawn in by the ventilation systems at Beacon Hill with smoke building up on the upper floors. We had to cut the power and the elevators. A contingency plan was established and paramedics were on scene," Cheater said. He also added that when older structures catch fire, toxic fumes are always a concern.
Shari Lough, who works inside an office near the fire, said she saw flames appearing in pockets on every floor of the Windsor Hotel. When the fire broke out, Lough recalled "a coworker went to check it out and saw flames shooting out from the building in the back lane. It was crazy! I just really hope nobody was inside."
The demolition of the Windsor Hotel was expedited under Winnipeg's emergency demolition rules and is set to begin later Wednesday.
