Funny and all but I seriously want to know what happened? Too much pressure? Or was he holding the hose incorrectly.

I feel bad for this person's family, my friend is a compulsive pack rat and I have to show him these videos and tell him that being a pack rat does not pay and 9 times out of 10 this is what happens. I tell him that not only does he put his and mine lives in danger, but he's putting the 1st responders life in danger. He has not listen yet and I hope this doesn't happen. great video

my gf is the same way, she thinks there is nothing wrong having the 6 plug power strip with all 6 recepticles used and keeping it wedged between the mattress and box spring is ok. im a 31 yr FF and you'd think with her having a college education she'd have an ounce of common sense but its only a matter of time and she gets pissed if I confront her about this ,iveseen what happens when these things short out. I guess you can't fix stupid.

+john6218att I will even go as far as to unplug something that is not being used, in a thunderstorm I seen a TV blew up that is scary. I will not use those power strips and extension cords and people who smoke has to so in the kitchen. I am from the city where we lost those 6 firefighters in a warehouse fire many years ago, I try not to think of the year because at the time I had a couple uncles working for the fire department here. Worcester since then lost another firefighter a few years ago out of stupidity.

It's not a matter of using all 6 receptacles... it's more a matter of maximum load. I have a large strip with 8 things plugged in. However, the maximum energy consumed is only 700W. Most of the time, the load is more like 100W. So it seems like a lot of plugs, but it's not that much power. Generally, **don't** put high-power appliances like anything that heats (microwave, heater, coffee pot, slow cooker, hair dryer, etc...) or has a large motor (vacuum, etc...) on the strip to begin with. Also, don't use sockets/plugs that are loose, and have them replaced. Better yet, tape them off and/or write a note. And, try to not crush wires (like under furniture) or bend them repeatedly at a very tight curve. It frays the wires.

I now read the news and they are saying this is possible arson ,why would someone do that, from your story it sounds to me the was a lot of clutter and something set that clutter up. I don't know, it sad but Barry dad made it out. may Barry RIP. I may not know these people but this fire is sad and was preventable

another tragedy. I will say one positive thing about the incident. The occupant was dead long before fire crews arrived if the person was on the second floor. The CO concentrations were definitely in the fatal range. So the fire departments on scene cannot take the blame for the occupants death. But they can take the blame for the absolute failure of this incident. These departments fight fire like they have never been on a fire. Operational actions by the fire departments enhanced the fire behavior. I will site several concerns and then give a tactical and operational plan for attack for this fire. 1. The fire departments on scene broke several windows on the first floor and allowed the front door to remain open. With the window open on the second floor a flow path was established into the second floor resulting in an increase in fire behavior on the second floor. 2. Attic fires are best fought from the interior of the structure. Pulling ceilings with hose lines in place with appropriate vertical ventilation will make this fire more manageable. 3. It is obvious that a minor roof failure triggers a evacuation of the building resulting in a defensive strategy. The construction features of this roof with the asphalt comp shingle will not catastrophically fail. Along with the simple fact that the ceiling joists are still intact makes working in this structure even with roof failure safe. If you have experience with this type of structure you will realize that they don't fall down catastrophically. 4. Placing an aerial platform in service on a single family dwelling like this is unnecessary. Most small single family dwellings like this one do not require a 1000 gallon per minute water streams to put them out. Surgical use of handlines will easily put this fire out. You just have to grow a pair of balls to make entry and apply the wet stuff to the red stuff not the roof which is designed to shed water. Note that in most structure fires water damage is the primary cause of property damage not smoke or fire damage. Stop putting the ladder trucks in service immediately on these fires you are wasting time and resources and to a real fire department you only look stupid. 5. The NIST UL study determined that the old fire curve has changed. Due to the synthetic furnishings, floor and wall coverings, the fire intensity in a confined fire in a structure, will free burn and then diminish in intensity until the fire department arrives on scene. This is due to the rapid production of products of combustion reducing oxygen concentrations below 10%. This causes a loss of intensity of the fire. Once doors and windows are opened, the intensity of the fire increases due to the uncontrolled influx of AIR and the unimpeded movement of fire gasses from the building. If you produce a flow path you better be prepared to deal with the increase in fire behavior. Note the intensity of this fire and rapid fire spread. It occurs because of unnecessary breaking of windows , vertical ventilation that has no interior support, and leaving the doors open. How do we manage this fire? First get some training in interior fire attack. Not just in metal C trains. Then right SOP's or SOG's to assist with generating a consistent operational platform for company officers to set up a successful management system and plan of attack. Then grow a pair of balls and function inside of structure fires. A plan has a standardized number of fire engines and trucks on working fires. Second establishment of water supply minimum requirements. Use equipment when needed not when it looks cool. (aerial ladder operation on single family dwellings). First on scene apparatus size up building, construction features, type of roof, occupancy load or rescue potential, location of the fire and smoke concentration, color and pressure or velocity, then based on this information set a strategy, offensive or defensive operations. Tactics for offensive operations on this fire. First in engine take at a minimum 1 3/4 " hose line with a Smooth bore 15/16 or 1" tip. Second in engine provide a feeder line and pull a second line to the interior and complete a primary search of the first floor. (Note that there was no smoke on the first floor at the windows or doors during most of this fire). The first in engine company accesses the second floor and progresses to the room of origin. Note that the room of origin is likely very small and will require a small volume of water. It was said that the occupant was a pack rat. OK, If possible cool room of origin with smooth bore on first line to slow fire progress and if fire is in hall way begin to cool the hall way. If there is lots of stuff in the hall way begin to move it out of your way down the stairs, Be sure not to block your egress. If possible close the door to the room of origin. This will buy the interior crews time to clear the hall way. Then access the room of origin and extinguish. Then immediately pull ceilings and access the fire in the attic. Truck operations, The first hole should be cut over the room of origin and time this cut with the the interior crews. NO hole if you don't have interior hose lines to manage attic fire. You guys need to learn how to cut off of a Roof ladder. This chicken shit hole is ridiculous. Punch down the ceiling. Remember that we cut the roof for only two basic reasons, To assist interior crews with heat and steam. The second reason to cut the roof is to impede horizontal spread of gasses and fire. Remember that in an attic fire with active free burning the fire and products of combustion will mushroom resulting in horizontal fire spread. If you cut the roof you are making either a heat hole to slow horizontal spread or a trench or strip cut to cut off horizontal spread. If you are going up there just say you cut a hole then don't waste your time. Second truck should be assigned to salvage and overhaul as well as utilities. This will assist with reducing water damage and assist interior crews with suppression of attic fire. Third engine will be establishing RIC and meet the 2 in 2 out requirement. This is an easy fire if you follow these easy guidelines and fight your fires from the inside. This is a safe and effective operation. Remember that ceiling joists are your friends. Also get ahead of the horizontal fire travel. Don't go where it is, go where it is going first. I know that we can do better and I hope that the next fire will go smoother

What you say is so true. All to often ladder trucks seem to pump thousands of gallons of water through a hole in the roof with flames coming out. It is obvious that the roof is burning on the underside and the water is simply going past the fire and destroying everything below it before running out of the front door.I can never understand why someone has never developed a boom arm that can extend beyond the ladder platform and lower a nozzle attached to a line a few feet through a hole in the roof. It would require a sideways and slightly upwards spray pattern in all directions (rather like a lawn sprinkler). This would take care of the attic and underside of the roof without causing serious water damage. In the hands of an experienced crew, it could be deployed without evacuating the interior team. I sometimes feel that fire fighting is caught in a time warp. We can land on the moon, but firefighting equipment has not seen much innovation in decades.

this fire was on the second floor for starters. Also there was roof collapse in the end with major damage to the structure. The house was deemed a total loss and probly is gone by now
