Brit Marling is probably the only modern film maker I'll be really excited to meet in person. Probably one of the few people doing original yet communicating movies these days.

Ever since Another Earth i've been wondering why i see something "special" about Brit's face. In this hyper detailed shot video i finally realized it. Brit is minutely lame on the left upper half of her face. From her left eye lid to left cheek it is slightly slow. It gives Brit a very special real world quality.

I love listening to Brit and Zal - both such charming, thoughtful, open people. Esp Brit with that particular cadence to her voice.. lovely to listen to. Not a huge fan of the interviewer - he has an abrasive quality to his voice and the comments he makes that indicate a rather large ego, but overall I enjoyed this.

Despite Roma and Alfonso Cuaron's cinematic prowess, when you realise how much Netflix spent in just the promotion campaigns it's still doesn't seem fully justified and fair when seen against amazing but unpopular independent films from around the world who're not able to have even 10% of what Roma managed to do.

Love these guys and their work, really really super interesting, am waiting impatiently for The OA Part II. They say a lot of stuff that is absolutely spot on: people ARE hungry for quality, it's the fake capitalist economy that tells us that people don't, but there's no study underpinning that. If you only get cheap stuff, sure, you'll take it. But if given a choice, people will always go for better. Also the fact that this is happening now, in a very specific time: these people and these stories are indeed exactly in the right place at the right time. Really significant that we get such movies now. I'm really thankful that some comment somewhere pointed me to The OA, I feel like having discovered something meaningful. But at 12:45: Zal: "The lucky audience member that's gonna walk into "Sound Of My Voice" without knowing anything about the film, and maybe hasn't seen Brit before, they'll be like: "Who's that? That's an interesting person, I want to know more about that person." And then they find that she also wrote the script. That's a good story!" Erp... Someone who, in their late twenties, wrote a movie about a guru-girl for herself so she could play being the Wise Woman that people worship...? I thought "That woman seems to have a serious ego-issue going on..." :-DDD

28:52 Zal: "It's a weird-ass movie." The weirdness of "The Sound of My Voice" accentuates the unbelievable nature of living within a cult and the uncertainty of what was going on. Going by indie film standards though, it's not that weird.

I have a bunch of questions about this movie and what I thought were the two key elements of the story. Casting was spot on, and the story brilliant; is it part of a trilogy? (Do better than Margaret Atwood did, please!). And was THE COMPANY YOU KEEP any influence on THE EAST? The night scenes of Havana compared to Miami? And finally, the Vampire Weekend (?) for the credits for THE SOUND OF MY VOICE. Oh, and I really loved the movie.

There is a part of the movie I don´t understand and I have searched everywhere. Why did the dad inject the girl with something between the toes, I guess some kind of drug. then she was tired at school. I just don’t understand the point. How high were they when they wrote OA
@kominion
5 жыл бұрын
Probably not at all? Don’t assume they’re “high”. Given Brit’s other interviews, and with Zal, they seem on a much different level than most. The OA has a lot of metaphors and influences, one of which is a story on an Iranian legend of mystical birds, written by Zal’s father. And numerous other mythologies and stories. Also, their having faith in each other, meeting certain people, delving into all the things that inspire, captivate, and motivate them. Maybe some people see that as being “high” or typical indie film “strangeness”, but I see it as them being more in touch with life, themselves, and each other on an artistic level.
