In his presentation as keynote speaker at the 32nd annual Heartwood Forest Council in May 2024, Dr. Chad Hanson explores recent abuse of the "fire-oak hypothesis", a forest management paradigm promoting the notion that historical forests of the eastern US were characterized by open, low-density oak stands maintained by frequent, low-intensity surface fires. The John Muir Project provides primary scientific research on forest ecology and fire, combined with a potent mix of agency monitoring and public education backed up by advocacy and litigation in the courts. In recent years, Dr. Hanson has turned his attention eastward to develop a better understanding of how fire plays a role in forest ecology and forest management in the eastern deciduous forests.
