The MACI (Matrix-Induced Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation) procedure is an advanced treatment for repairing damaged cartilage in the knee. It begins with a small biopsy of cartilage taken from the patient’s knee, which is then stored in a lab. When surgery becomes necessary, the harvested cartilage cells are cultured on a special membrane, allowing them to grow before being implanted back into the knee.
The MACI procedure is often used to restore joint function and delay or avoid more aggressive interventions, such as joint replacement.
