The problem with this drug is that in the context of Emergency medicine its not considered an opioid but rather a Tricylclic Antidepressant with opioid properties (Narcan stands a pretty good chance of causing a seizure with this drug). However, because it is used for pain and is a partial opioid agonist, we clinically treat it as an opioid everywhere else in medicine in terms of the prescribing rationale.

I’m 68 and have taken tramadol for sciatica but now I take one 50mg capsule twice a day - not for pain but because the withdrawal is so brutal. It’s like you have the flu, you’re extremely weak and shivery and can’t keep still in bed. So I take my two a day purely because I can’t deal with the withdrawal from this awful drug.

I'm 68 and take about 1.5 tabs/day. The restless legs are the worst for me if I try to quit, which I have and gone back again. Best to wean (get down to about 25mg then go off). You will still feel a malaise, but coffee and exercise can help with that.

I take about 50mg/day and admit to liking it. I haven't increased my does much above that, but do dread if I have to go off it. After about 5 days, the worst is over, but takes a full week to 10 days.

I'm planning to taper it at a comfortable pace. I do the same with antidepressants too.

Coming off psychoactive medications suddenly can actually cause neurological damage. Check Dr Joseph's interviews on various meds about this if you're interested.

@@greatwhiteshark9192 I've been taking 8 daily for over ten years for chronic back pain, once the pain started winning I klnew the Tramadol were losing efficacy due to habituation, and have now dropped the number to 2 a day using cannabis, prescribed byn a medical cannabis pain doctor. I intend to drop the other two gradually and replace with cannabis, non addictive and at the same time preationgm my glaucoma and insomnia. I also suspect I am ADHD and CBD is being trialed for that too now.

I have extreme spinal stenosis - doc wants to do a 5-level fusion lower spine. Not going to do that - I’m 65 years old. I take 100 mg every morning and have for 8 years now. Cannot walk across the room without them (and Meloxicam 15mg) but need to increase to 150 mg Tramadol now. Have tried to taper down to eventually stop but every joint in my lower back and legs just BURN with pain and weakness. WORST thing for me on Tramadol is extreme fatigue!!! Anybody got any ideas???

Venlafaxine has a stimulating effect. It helped with my depression and fatigue. Haven't checked but think it's compatible with tramadol. Brand name Effexor.

I agree with your comment!! Tramadol is highly effective & fast acting for people with major treatment resistant depression as well. It's a good medication when it's used properly. Any medication can be considered habit forming if it works & your body needs it. People that need their blood pressure medicine for example - they need it but doctors don't say they're dependent/addicted. Tramadol is a great med & it's a shame it became a schedule IV (4) controlled substance. Doctors & the FDA have really gone overboard. Caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco, lottery tickets, and virtually anything can be habit forming for some. The medical community & US FDA have really gone too far with their paranoia. Just because some people may abuse something why should everyone else have to suffer??
