More about the music:
Dr. Gopalnath gives a soothing rendition of this popular kriti. The Kalyanavasantham phrases are doled out with joyful expressions; Srikanth’s violin offers a very pleasing support to the saxophone with her warm, sustained tone and rejoinders.
Dr. Gopalnath had a special penchant for this raga - his improvisations are so elaborate and soulful that in 1992, renowned music composer A.R. Rahman roped him for a Tamil film ‘Duet’ in which, his improvisations on Kalyanavasantham were adapted as the film’s title music. This piece became so popular that Dr. Gopalnath became a household name in India after the release of the film.
Praveen and Prakash bring exciting and crisp fillers to this appealing rendition.
Raag Kalyanavasantham is derived from the 21st Melakarta scale of the Carnatic repertoire called Keeravani. It uses 5 notes in its ascent, omitting Re and Pa (2nd and 5th) and uses all 7 notes of Keeravani in its descent. The ascending notes are shadja, sadharana gandhara, shudh madhyama, shudh dhaivat and kakali nisada respectively. In the descending notes, panchama and chatusruti risabha are used.
