How infectious diseases affect vulnerable populations is a major concern within UCL, and we were delighted to host an open seminar by Karen Jacobson of Boston University, who has worked in this field for many years.
Her group studies the epidemiology of infectious diseases, with a primary focus on tuberculosis. With local and international partners, they combine epidemiological approaches with bacterial and host genetic data and statistical models to explore questions about tuberculosis transmission and outcomes.
She has established a highly productive collaboration with researchers in Cape Town, South Africa. Her work has particular emphasis in understanding how substance use impacts on tuberculosis transmission and response to therapy.
She is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Section of Infectious Diseases, Boston University School of Medicine, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Epidemiology, Boston University School of Public Health.
