Of course we want the story of Edward 's descent from a demon! If we didn't like a good story why would we love history? Also of course we could argue that the Koh-i-noor was stolen by conquest,as it undoubtedly was, and should be handed back. Given the history of the jewel having passed through rulers by conquest , murder and revolt however it is hard to see who has a "moral" right to it.

These tales are so entertaining! History is honestly so humorous at times, it amazes me that anyone thinks it is a boring subject! The last part about the young maharaja’s diamond is a difficult tale, though. I visited Agra Fort in Uttar Pradesh in India this February, a historic royal residence which once housed a famous diamond that is now in the Tower of London. I saw the diamond in question last year when I visited the Tower, and when I was stood in that beautiful fort I really felt like it belonged back in India. It is a great shame that we took so much from them.

What a wonderful telling! I am not British, so knew nothing of Thomas Blood. What an interesting historical character! I can't help but wonder what he had over King Charles to not only keep his head, skin, limbs, etc., but to also gain lands, a pardon, and other rewards! I always have some small hope that new historical information will come to light as someone opens a dusty old book, or box, or attic, within their family's possession. That does happen on occasion, doesn't it? Would love to hear some of those kinds of stories!

As long as we’re making a Wish List, May we add the Declaration of Arbroath as a topic? On reading a translation of the highlights of it (on a tea towel at the Culloden battlefield gift shop) I found echos of the US Declaration of Independence. Is that too much of a reach? Many of the clan family names on the headstones at Culloden are signatories of the Declaration of 1776.

There is an absolutely delightful movie from Sacha Guitry, made in 1937, "Pearls of the Crown", which purports to trace the history, theft, and recovery(?) of the pearls stolen from the crown of England. Within a framed narrative, Guitry, his wife Jacqueline Delubac, and a host of gifted international actors play a range of characters from Francois I of France, Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots and many others, to present day investigators on the prowl for the pearls. It's full of wonderful research, terrific humor (Francois asks the artist painting his son's portrait to improve the chin - "I failed there"; and my favorite moment, when modern Guitry, who is enthusiastically relating the entire story to his bemused wife, picks up a small book, then brushes it away for a huge one with a throw-away line: "Those always confuse me.").

The story about accepting bribes to let people try on the various crown jewels remind me of a another story. When Shelly Winters won the Academy Award for her role in "Anne Frank" she gave it to the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam. Although no one tried to steal the Oscar, it was eventually put into a sealed case because the gold patina was being worn away as everyone visiting the museum would pick up the Oscar and deliver an acceptance speech. Not exactly hammering the royal crown flat, but a funny story.

Would love to see an episode about Civil War Oxford, whence the King, Queen, & court took up residence. We're the Crown jewels taken there? Parliament met at the Bodliean Library, the Royal Mint was in operation, there are earthen fortifications in the college gardens. The Queen lived at one college; the Royal mistress lived at another. The court ladies were quartered on the college fellows, to their dismay.

Another amazing video Dr. Kat! I do wonder what happened in that room for Thomas Blood to be pardoned. I know you said it was a private meeting, and they didn't share the details. My guess is that he did a very thorough security assessment on threats to the King's jewels and person. That would normally be capital T Treason - but he had nothing to lose at that point.
