Great review. I have the exact same boots. I can't, however, see how you can conclude that the soles are " pretty much identical " to none MIE Dr Martens. They are vastly different, as you would see if you look at a pair of MIE next to an imported pair. The imported Dr Martens soles are much lighter and you can see right through them ( they have an almost yellow hue, where as the MIE Dr Martens are far more opaque ) I have worn Dr Martens footwear since I was about 12 years old and I will be 62 in February of this year ( 2023 ) so half a century. I have had many pairs over this time and I can assure you the MIE are far superior.

I was in highschool in the 90s and had at least 6 pairs. After ordering a pair online, I realized there was no "Made in England" on the bottom. I sent them back, they were awful and cheap, just like the clown boots you find in Journeys. I then stumbled upon this line and bought a black pair. Holy crap, they are just like I remember. These are my favorite boots ever, I highly recommend the vintage MIE versions. I'm guessing I'll cherish them for life. Just make sure you roll up your jeans and wear 'em right! Ox bloods are my next purchase.

Do they run narrow..I have wide feet😄
@vectorstain
5 жыл бұрын
That's a good question, I have slightly wider flat feet. I would try on a crappy pair at the mall to answer that question though. The main difference in sizing from the clown shoes at journeys was how the silhouette of the toe looks. They are minimal and slim on these, but almost like a bubble in the non english pairs. Sorry I couldn't be more precise on the width.

Also, in terms of sizing, back in the day I wore a UK 10/ US 11. When I received the pair that were made in Thailand, they were way too big. I was puzzled, as I had bought them many times before and knew my size well. All was well when the English pair arrived, they were an exact fit. Another thing worth noting is that I've definitely had to break them in, but that's usually the case with any well made boot. Now they fit like a glove, except those go on hands. So they fit like a foot glove? And we digress.

@@owenmclaughlan5439 I'm a 10.5 US in Converse and I wear a 10 UK/ 11 US. Personally, I tend to buy leather boots slightly smaller vs slightly bigger if I have to make a choice. I do this because the leather eventually stretches out. However, if they are slightly bigger, thick wool socks work. I ended up buying the ox bloods and they were slightly larger than my previous black boots in size, very minimal difference though. Hope that helps, I prefer the classic 1460s btw.

I bought a pair and they feel like the way they used to in the 70s 80s. Saying that, docs always lasted one year with constant wear. These days I can afford more than one pair of boots so they should last a few years longer. Still, it is special having docs that are made in England even if they no longer retail for £19.99p

Really interested to see how these pan out in relation to your experiences with the For Life boots and also, what are your impressions in terms of quality, feel etc vs the For Life boots when they're fresh and new? I'm going to pull the trigger on one of the Oxblood 1460s in about a week but I'm still not made up on what pair to go for. I kind of prefer the look of the leather on the For Life boots and the darker stiching... but I'm sensing these might be a better quality boot all round.

Ha! Rose is killing it Hahaha. I have a pair of 1490 Made in England that I've had for 3 years now and Rose inspected my boots as well. Love these boots. At first I was hesitant too to spend that much on them but they are superior to the standard DM line of boots and shoes. They break in so nice, a little stiff at first but not terrible. Dr. Marten's recommends the DM dubbin polish for the Quilon leather, it's all I've ever used on them and I have no complaints. Cheers.

Fantastic review! This was the deciding factor for me to shovel out the money for a vintage pair (in black). I’ve been wearing my Chinese 1460s for about a year and they’ve been holding up great (I don’t really understand the hatred some have towards the Asian made ones?), but I also have an old pair from the 90s. I could instantly tell a difference in leather and overall feel. So, naturally I wanted a new pair of English ones. I’m so stoked!

It's not so much a hatred for Asian made boots, but many people, myself included just hate to see companies from the UK and USA transferring manufacturing overseas for what amounts to slave labour wages. In my experience quality goes downhill in most cases because craftsmanship and pride in one's work is often directly connected to wages paid for that work. I've owned several pairs of DM's, and although my one Asian made pair were still quite good, they weren't as durable as MIE ones. There was a noticeable difference in the quality of the stitching and thickness and quality of the leather as well.
@grugg3108
Жыл бұрын
I feel like Asian-made DMs would be OK (in terms of quality) if they 1. Had a shank 2. Used slightly tougher midsole materials 3. Either used better leather, or didn't charge 150-190 us dollars for a Asian made pair of boots (range is picked out between the 1490 and 1460 boots, memory betrays due to recent effects of inflation). Theres also moral concerns, considering that companies only move production to for one reason, and the results are almost always the same for the workers (low wages, long hours, poor conditions) Made In England Docs, in my opinion, only need a shank and they'd not be too far off from a proper price (honestly a little bit of "paying for a brand", but it's still competitive for similar quality boots).

A bit tight on the middle of the foot. The 9 1/2 are roomy.. about 1cm play front and back. Feels ok at the side. Not sure what's the best bet. I'm reading in places that they should be tight and they'll mold to your foot.. then other places are saying you should leave room. What's your thoughts on this? Should I sick with the cosey 9s or go with the Rooney 9 1/2s

I have several pairs of DMs, including the Made in England 1460 oxbloods. The quality of the MIE boots is superb, as you say they do take a bit more wearing in but they look better and better with wear. I think the MIE boots are true sizes whereas the Asian boots seem to come up a half size bigger and this is exaggerated further as they stretch. It is difficult to say for defo but the MIE soles seem to wear slightly better. The MIE shoes and boots seem a bit less bouncy than the Asian models. I will only buy the Made in England boots and shoes in future. Regards, Jim

It may be my odd shaped feet but I bought a pair of the MIE 1460’s from the DM website in size 9 and they were too small so I then tried a 9.5 and found them to be too loose. The last used by DM seemed a strange shape. I couldn’t lace them tightly enough and so I returned them and got a refund. I have a pair of 1461’s MIE shoes in size 9 and they are perfect size. So, I then tried the standard 1460’s in the DM shop in Brighton in a size 9 and they were a perfect and comfortable fit straight away. These boots were made in Vietnam and I am very pleased with quality and this comes from a regular Red Wing wearer. Has anyone else had a similar experience with the shape/size of the last on the MIE 1460’s?

I have the regular 1460 DM’s and they fit better and much more comfortable. I couldn’t find any flaws. They’re actually not that bad at all. I was surprised. The leather is thinner. Mine are made in Bangladesh. I also own Solovair’s. Those look and feel identical to made in Asia docs. Just a little thicker leather. That’s all. I tried the MIE and I don’t like the fit. Quality is just slightly better and I own $500-$1500 boots made in Italy.

It might be worth mentioning that DM sizes are one ahead of what is expected. I bought my own size 8 in the For Life series and, having worn them for a week, I find they're a size too big (and because I've worn them for a week I can't exchange them for a smaller size). My ex sold me a brand new pair of standard size 7 which I'm much happier with and wear all the time thereby making the £195.00 For Life boots redundant. Definately buy/try a size smaller than your normal foot size before you commit to the investment. Not a mistake I'll make again.......

Perfect in fact.I used to see so many mistakes made where I worked on a regular basis. On ancient and dangerous machinery.The fact griggs sold all his stock abroad was pure greed on his part.trouble is there was at least 4 Griggs owned factories in Wollaston.Only ones still there now are 1 Griggs place probably shared with solovair and loakes footwear who refused to buy in with Griggs when they first came to Wollaston.

I wish there were more styles for the made in England collection or at least more colours .

Leisha i agree there aren’t enough styles to choose from in the MIE line, but it is so worth it to get a classic style like 1460 or 1490 made in England. They are much higher in quality and they just look better. You will notice a huge difference, trust me! I have MIE 1460 in black and 1490 in Oxblood, and love both ... but 1460’s were easier to break in and faster to lace up :)

Okay folks...heres how you never by a pair of laces again: ( I've had one pair of laces other than the originals, in my boots for 10 years and I wear 14-hole boots) Paracord. Go to your craft store and by 5 or 10 feet . 10 ft of paracord or more if you're wearing larger whole boots. I think the package I got was 20 ft and I know somewhere I have more paracord around here. Plus you can get it in different colors. Now how about that? If nobody's ever mentioned this or thought of this the revolution will not be televised.

I hadnt heard much of it in the past, but I googled and there are at least 2 who will do in the UK, with proper DM branded soles.

You pay for quality with the MIE boots. You will notice the big difference compared to the cheep Asian ones. I only buy the MIEs. Made in the original factory with the original materials. All top grade. They’ll last years and years.

Are you sure that there are cobblers who resole dr martens with original soles? I don’t think so.

I just bought a pair off ebay and I'm suspicious! They look identical but are they supposed to smell like pvc? The leather is a little thinner than my solovairs, as well (I've never owned docs). detailing is identical to yours, down to the smallest, so maybe the coating is just smelly...? The soles are also a little wavy, as if they cooled too fast out of the mold... just a little, though. Also, the "MADE IN ENGLAND" on the tongue is all caps where I noticed the "in" isn't capitalized on one or two others that I've seen. Am I just being paranoid? Packaging and everything is all up to par, in terms of quality. That smell is just throwing me off!

The vintage series isn‘t too bad. In my opinon they are too expensive. I also have a pair of thai 1460s, but the leather is crap. If I ever buy a new pair of 1460 style boots l will order from Solovair. Same style, from the same factory, made with the same machines by the same workers. They are like the DMs were before moving the production to asia, and better.
