Dr Obote’s Speech (1969)
When Uganda got independence, there were two geopolitical forces. The communist/socialist East led by Russia. And the Capitalist West led by the USA.
When Uganda got independence in 1962, the UPC government started a process to align with the East. This did not go down well with the former colonialists Britain. The British were later said to have played a ‘behind the scenes’ role in removing the UPC government from power in 1971.
In this rare audio recording, the UPC president Dr AM Obote is heard proposing to the UPC delegates’ conference his ‘socialist manifesto’ which he entitled ‘The Common Man’s Charter’. Shortly after that, in 1971, his government was overthrown in a military coup led by his army commander Idi Amin Dada.
