First of all I own absolutely nothing. All rights go to their prospective owners including Electric Youth, [Merlin] Secretly Distribution, Entertainment One U.S., LP, Secretly Canadian Records, ABC, CBS, Fox, MGM, Warner Brothers Universal, History Channel, Turner, Columbia Pictures, TNT, Dr. Seuss Enterprise, and others. I claim fair use, I am not making a dime off of this. I did this to share my love of Dr. Seuss in light of current events. "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
This is a tribute to Dr. Seuss using footage from "Biography" Dr. Seuss: Rhymes & Reasons as well as various TV Specials that range from 1942 till his death in 1989. I am not including post 1989 footage because the footage I used Dr. Seuss had some degree of personal involvement while after his death he had no involvement and all involvement was done by his wife and estate. I differ with Dr. Seuss politically but wholeheartedly agree that he changed the way we see children's literature. Dr. Seuss goes down in American history for creating iconic books and the way we learn how to read. As a child we all see Dr. Seuss book innocently and see nothing wrong with it until we grow up and people have to point it out to us. That is why I did this tribute and chose the song Innocence by Electric Youth. This reminds me of a quote " Racism is something you learn, Not something you are born with."
At the end of this video I included by favorite quote by Dr. Seuss in which he says "Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory." - Dr. Seuss. I like this quote because we always took Dr. Seuss books for granted and never valued them as much as we should have until they were "retired". All of this is my opinion but for all of you who are saying that his 6 books are being "retired" not banned. I disagree, Dr. Seuss Enterprise is not publishing 6 of his books which will cause these books to go out of print. Although they are still around they are now commandeering high prices on online retailers. Although you can still look at these books online it is not the same as having a physical copy in your hands. While Dr. Seuss made books with images that are not considered politically correct today it is a product of it's time and is considered historical. Racism was prevalent during the early to mid 20th century and over the years changed his views. To bring about tolerance Dr. Seuss wrote The Sneetches and Other Stories. The video contains scenes Horton Hatches the Egg, The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T., How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, Horton Hears a Who!, The Cat in the Hat, The Lorax, Dr. Seuss on the Loose, The Hoober-Bloob Highway, Halloween Is Grinch Night, Pontoffel Pock, Where Are You?, The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat, and The Butter Battle Book, all of which had some involvement with Dr. Seuss. I am against censorship or "retiring" books in which I leave you with this question, today 6 Dr. Seuss are "retired", what's from keeping people from wanting to retire other Dr. Seuss books like Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!?
If Dr. Seuss gets retired what will stop people from finding other books to "retire,"I leave you with some of my favorite quotes:
“There is more than one way to burn a book. And the world is full of people running about with lit matches.”― Ray Bradbury
“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”― George Orwell
“Political correctness is America’s newest form of intolerance, and it is especially pernicious because it comes disguised as tolerance. It presents itself as fairness, yet attempts to restrict and control people’s language with strict codes and rigid rules. I’m not sure that’s the way to fight discrimination. I’m not sure silencing people or forcing them to alter their speech is the best method for solving problems that go much deeper than speech.”-George Carlin
“Political correctness is just fascism disguised as manners.” -George Carlin
“I believe in any kid’s ability to read any book and form their own judgments. It’s the job of a parent to guide his/her child through the reading of every book imaginable. Censorship of any form punishes curiosity.” ― Sherman Alexie
“Political Correctness started out as a movement that intended to protect minorities from harassment. But it has morphed into an excuse for self-righteous zealots to harass people who supposedly offended minorities, even if the minorities don't actually feel offended."- Oliver Markus Malloy
