I went plant-based 2 years ago. I never thought I could do it, but I was eventually convinced after listening to Dr. Pam Popper for a few months. Cardiovascular issues run in my family and I didn't want to go down that road. My Mom had a massive stroke and I was her full-time caregiver for 4 1/2 years. I didn't want that for myself. I have always cooked from scratch, but going plant-based still involved a learning curve, but I am at the point right now that I love the food I make. I am a normal weight, perfect blood pressure, cholesterol, and my arthritis went away. I am 72. At this point the thought of eating animals disgusts me. I could never go back.

I love being vegan and going on 1-year with a plant-based diet! A few talking points I share with people interested in knowing more is I share with them the working conditions of the people that work in slaughter houses and how, as a group, they have some of the highest rates of depression, DUI's, spousal abuse...the list goes on and on. I find that bringing in the human element helps them to understand the overall crisis we have in the meat industry. Then I tell them that the world slaughters more than 70 billion land animals a year and add on that we're only 8 billion people. That one is a pretty big shocker to lots of folks.

She is incredibly wholesome, very calming and pleasant to listen to. Eating WFPB is truly the best way to improve one's health longterm, it has been shown time and time again. Though it is worth mentioning we all have our individual metabolic profiles and food preferences - personally i'm not fond of fruit, at least anything beyond small to moderate quantities unlike Susanna here, i simply don't enjoy it, nor do i feel good from it. But i do love greens and vegetables...and a lot of spices(rosemary, oregano, tumeric, pepper, etc...everything), raw and cooked. Predominantly cooked starches together with decent amount of fat, a whole load of greens/spices and other phytonutrient rich vegetables like garlic/onion - that is the way of eating which makes me feel and function at my best on a daily basis, physically and mentally, not munching on a lot of fruit. But again, each to their own. P.S. A cup of plant based milk+tumeric+ginger+green spices in the morning is absolutely wonderful and refreshing with a bit of that spicy kick :)

Mostly for health reasons in my case, but along the way it soon became about the reduction of unneccesary suffering as well. You probably need to get a consultation with somebody to have your specific questions or needs assessed and planned. It sounds like you're on the right track. I used the daily dozen app by nutritionfacts.org to make sure I'm getting the right foods and then it was a matter of the right variety and ratios and then discipline with eating times...but that's me. It was easy for me but I did it younger and having already adapted to eating beans and greens, grains, fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds, herbs and spices and now mushrooms. Keep learning and you'll do great. It feels great eating healthy and knowing that you're not having to depend on eating animals. But if you've been eating animals a long time you may benefit from having nutritional guidance from a seasoned plant based doctor or at least a plant based nutritionist

Steel cut oats with blueberries, figs, dates and a banana around lunchtime. Then a few hours later I will have veggies with a grain or potatoes or a salad with beans. A few times a week I have an onion cooked in veg stock with mushrooms. I think in time my appetite might perk up a bit but for now I imagine my body is really happy with great food.

People go vegan and come from not having lived this way so there is a learning curve. There's nothing that you can't get in plants that you need to get from animals. That's including eggs. You have to eat a variety of whole plant foods. And sometimes it helps to do some fasting. And it always helps to see a plant based doctor if you're having trouble or feel like you need some like you need something different. It's not like emagically just just picked eggs for brain fog and that's what it was needing. There is no evidence that we have some sort of requirement for consuming eggs. Eggs really aren't healthy or safe and they result in very tragic outcomes because they are not sustainable. You can also see a vegan nutritionist or dietician or consult with someone through Plant Based Telehealth

There is a learning curve and in the end it always comes down to very simply eating a variety of beans greens grains fruits veggies mushrooms nuts seeds herbs and spices. We do want to be careful not to do things like drink a lot of coffee and tea around meal times and some people especially women may benefit from adding vitamin C rich foods to their iron rich foods for example.

I’m wondering why people here laugh at myself becoming a VEGAN. I started wondering with all of the documentaries out here, I was tired being fat & unable to lose weight. I went “Intermittent fasting”, then meat didn’t taste so good. Tried to eat a wing, a leg & got nausea for the evening, since July 2020, I’ve seen my 290 cholesterol go to 154, the doctor initially wondered had I been another veteran on the rock(crack). So these days my pockets are ok, no paying $27 for a loaf of ground beef. Things are greater in the gym, my sleep is getting better & from my weight of 245, I’m holding on to 190-192 for 6 months, hopefully before June I can lose another 20-24 pounds & I don’t regret my change. I suspect had a started 5-7 years ago, I’d be doing greater now, but it’s ok. I’m 64 & my middle brother refused to listen to anyone. Had a heart attack in 2002 & here it is years later, his 2nd heart attack took him out. He left us in Oct 2020, never making it to the ER, flat lined in the ambulance. Plant life style was joked about & more laughter. Today I have 2 brothers in the 300 zone in the 400-pound zone. I’m told to be quiet by my own mom in her older years, she said let them figure it out. He figured how to get out of life

It can help with the measurement of micronutrients on occasion. The website version of the app is free to use.

I haven't had covid but some years ago both my husband and I had a virus which wiped out our sense of smell altogether and the only tastes we had were, like you, were salt and sugar from the tastebuds on our tongues. Being a foodie it was traumatic! We found that it helped to eat spicy foods like chilli as the heat at least added something to the sensation of eating. Our senses did come back after some time but some things have never smelt the same although you get used to the new smell after time. I would go easy on yourself and if you need to indulge in foods that are more salty or sugary for now then so be it although i appeciate your desire to try a more healthy plant-based diet at this time. (I am trying to do the same at the moment). I hope that your senses return very shortly ❤

It's essential eating whole plant foods like a variety of beans, greens, grains, fruits, veggies, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices. It was coined by Dr T Colin Campbell in the mid 80s. But the concept has been around for centuries, like the natural hygiene movement that is now the national health association. Dr Greger of NutritionFacts.org has a free app called the Daily Dozen that is backed by the most comprehensive meta-analysis on nutritional science and is an easy way to get started integrated these healthy foods into your routine. That's crazy timing. I rarely get sick, maybe 3 times in over 10 years of being being vegan. Before I went vegan I literally got sick twice a year every fall and spring with each year having a progressively worse sinus infection. In fact it got so bad I had x-rays taken that year in 2011 because I was wheezing from infection and drainage. And they did my blood work that month twice to make sure there wasn't something going on with my lungs. I went vegan that year right after that. Since then I've only had my blood work checked out of pure curiosity. My results have been consistently been significantly better, esp. regarding my cholesterol. And the rare few times I was sick it was incredibly short lived and very mild. Perhaps you'll have the same experience eventually despite the luck of COVID ... There was a study that showed those with COVID that are vegan are 73% less likely to have moderate to severe symptoms. So, perhaps it was perfect timing for you, maybe would have been worse if you hadn't gone vegan...

Why don’t they call this healing with a whole food herbivore diet? The term vegan itself does not necessarily mean healthy.

Because humans are animals and vegan seeks to do as little harm as possible to animals then the healthiest diet for human animals must apply. And that is an exclusively whole plant food diet, which is vegan. However, whole food plant based does not necessarily require one to be vegan and isn't necessarily vegan because even the doctors that promote lifestyle medicine, that are literally on my channel as well, realize the healthiest whole food plant based diet is a vegan one, even in one if my most recent videos Dr Fuhrman literally says this. So highest level veganism is one eating a variety of the healthiest whole plant foods because that exhibits the most compassion for all life and it happens to be that whole plant foods are the most sustainable for the environment meaning they're the least invasive and cause the least harm to all life. Because this way of eating is healthiest it also makes it more sustainable for the human making them not want to eat animals and inspire others and even know that this way is best for their children and so on. But even many of these plant based doctors will say the occasional animal or other processed foods won't necessarily hurt you because they believe we are resilient enough. When I say occasional I mean less than moderate. But the healthiest is qualified as whole food plant based vegan. I just say whole plant foods usually, or even easier vegan. Many years ago I grappled with this. I got into activism after being a closet vegan for 5 years. I started studying nutrition about 6 years ago and realized I wanted to volunteer my services to help people and I almost went with something plant based in the name instead of vegan. But vegan is more comprehensive as it covers food and far beyond, and it just so happens to be the healthiest foods are vegan. My dream was and still is to refine veganism so that it is synonymous with the healthiest way of eating, to include humans in the equation of compassion. So, when we say vegan sure we may need to qualify what this means just like when you say whole food plant based you would have to explain what that means. My goal has always been to normalize eating healthy, to make vegan about health. Because I couldn't and wouldn't advocate anything less so of course I want it to be about whole plant foods. Hence the ten groups I always recommend beans, greens, grains, fruits, veggies, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices like in the free Daily Dozen app by nutritionfacts.org backed by the most comprehensive meta-analysis on nutritional science, you can see this clearly here VeganLinked.com/GoVegan. The infamous Dr Greger won the vegan hall of fame by the way, video is on my channel, one of my most cherished run and gun productions... So I don't know why you wouldn't choose to be vegan over merely just plant based, are you trying to cling onto abusing animals for some reason?

@@VeganLinked No it’s because my husband is vegan for the last year and he gained weight! I also see other vegans that are overweight. Why? Because he’s eating a bunch of crappy junk food that happens to be vegan. Whole food eliminates vegan junk food. I would hope that my comment above would not lead one to believe that I was for abusing animals. Thank you for a well explained response.

@@MaryDavidson911 you're husband has a choice to eat vegan healthy whole plant foods or junk food. Being vegan he is making a personal choice that is not infringing on other animal's rights to live. If you want him to be a healthy vegan then throw the junk food away and cook him a proper variety of whole plant foods.

Can we stop saying that you can heal yourself on a vegan diet. French-fries are vegan, potato chips are vegan, Orio cookies are vegan, coke is vegan, beyond meat products are vegan. None of the above mentioned are healthy and help with health related issues. Can we please start using the term whole food plant based. All the doctors in the movie recommend staying away from vegan junk food. There are plenty of sick and overweight vegans out there.

You went to a naturopathic school NOT a medical school. They are NOT the same by any stretch of the imagination. If the general public was aware of the difference they would run away from naturopaths.

I have various other types of doctors on this channel if this type doesn't float your boat. This video is about this person and their journey into veganism, insights and perspectives. And if people knew how dangerous going to a S.A.D. medical doctor is they would run even further away. But this channel isn't about any specific type of doctors exclusively or discussing their professions. Focus please, i have several different cardiologist on here as well, if you eat animals, what's the excuse?

One of the biggest differences is that Naturopathic schools focus on prevention while optimizing diet, nutrition and lifestyle, whereas med schools are focused primarily on treatment and drug prescribing for disease. Yes, it would be nice if people were more aware of this.
