George Salverson
CBC Radio's first drama editor dies
George Salverson, a talented writer and dramatist, and CBC Radio’s first-ever Radio Drama Editor, passed away last week. He was 89.
Son of Governor-General Award-winning novelist Laura Goodman Salverson, George was an incredibly prolific and versatile writer, penning popular radio plays, television shows and films in a variety of genres.
George’s many radio plays entertained Canadian listeners during CBC Radio’s Golden Age, when entire families would gather around the radio for an evening’s entertainment. Along with contemporaries Len Peterson, Bill Mitchell and Bill Strange, George created popular dramas that were relevant to the times and the listeners. Among the plays he brought to CBC Radio: his wonderful 1949 adaptation of Dracula, starring Lorne Green, Alan King and Lister Sinclair.
