Thank you so much for being so generous by sharing your knowledge/expertise. I recently sewed a skirt from the Lutterloh system and kept saying to my sister, "I don't know what this bubble thing is here on my hip." Now I do! I have a 32 in waist and 44 in hips. I'm so pleased to find out why that skirt's side seams look the way they do, doubly pleased it can be remedied, and that it wasn't my error that caused the bubble! Thank you, again. Now, to the darts!

First, thank you so much for these videos, they have been gold mine as I've been learning more about sewing and pattern making. I ponder about darts when pairing the skirt piece to the bodice and dart lines do not match. Should I rather move darts on the skirt piece to match the bodice princess line, or shuffle them around on both pieces?

Just curious...my book shows the waistline on the skirt sloper being dropped by about 1/4 inch at center back but in both of your videos this step isn’t included. Is this step necessary? If not, why is it included in the book and when would one want to drop that CB a bit? Love your videos! Thanks in advance 🙏🏻

How would you recommend adjusting the dart length for a taller figure? I'm 6'2" and the distance from my waist to hip is 13" whereas you said that's usually 7-10".
@christophersartorial7671

Hi Robyn. I wouldn't change the dart length. The change in the curve at the side seam should be sufficient.

I wish I'd seen this before now - I would never have considered putting two darts in my own patterns, as other tutorials have implied that this is for 'larger' ladies. But I've just done my measurements and realised that, including ease, I'm trying to taper 12" with only one dart front and back, giving me a very curvy side seam!
@christophersartorial7671

Yes. Sometimes this is misunderstood. It's more about the difference between waist and hip than it is about size.
@reddssladee

I just realized that this sloper isn't for me my waist isn't that much smaller than my hip so maybe I only need one dart. I'm guessing that's why this technique isn't working for me. I just wanted to draft a basic skirt with darts so that I can make a variety of skirts off of that one pattern. Is it possible to make a variety of skirts with just one dart? Like gored skirts or yoke skirts?

Thank for this lesson! I have a question regarding the fitting stage with muslin. My side seams true with one another and appear to be falling straight however they do not perfectly align on the side seam tape of my Dress form. Is the dress forms side seam something I should be strictly following for exact alignment or is it give or take? Please let me know thank you!!
@christophersartorial7671

A dress form is guide to help you fit, but don't take the seam placement on the form too literally. Seam placement on dress forms can vary, not only from form to form, but even left side vs. right side on the same form.

Wow! Your other video with the regular single dart showed all the fitting problems I have with a muslin. This, on the other hand, looks so much better and is definitely how I will do my sloper now! I've made a skirt using the single dart and it looked so weird on me. It was a tutorial made by a lady who is not as curvy as I am. I even felt weird when my sewing friends say I need double darts because the conventional I'm used to is the single dart. I won't be intimidated anymore! I'll be drafting a new one right away! Thank you so very much, Mr. Sartorial, for sharing your knowledge and expertise. Nothing but respect and admiration from my part. I also see my future as a binge-watcher of your videos.

Thank you, Chris. I'm drafting it as I write. I made a first one last night and used the waist measurement instead of the hip! The same technique is also described in the book Patternmaking for Fashion Design, by Helen Joseph Armstrong, but your videos make it more fun like in a classroom. I'm actually following you while only checking the book for reference.

Double check you're measuring from the true high point shoulder to your waist level. If you are wearing a top when measuring, be aware that some tops are made with the shoulder seam moved forward.
@angiemenapa

Chris, I finished my first muslin. My measurements are similar to your mannequin. Waist = 28.5" (no ease), hip: 39.5" (no ease). With ease would be: waist: 28.5" + 0.5" = 29", hip: 39.5" + 2" = 41.5". My fitting issues are: 1) Front is quite perfect. No work needed. 2) Back is still tight around full hip and showing stress lines and therefore, still pulls side seams towards the back at widest hip level. I added my seam allowances and stitched within them. At this point, I am thinking of going ahead and doing a full bum adjustment. What do you think? Thank you
@angiemenapa
7 жыл бұрын
Update: I will put the Full Seat Adjustment on hold. Side seams will remain as they are. I will need to take in more fabric for the dart depth. They will need to be deeper than the sloper I started with. Keeping them as they are while trying to take in side seams only takes me back to the problem I want to avoid initially - a steep curve on the side seam. It's looking good after a good amount of pinning.
@christophersartorial7671

Sounds like you're on the right track. If you've maxed out the depth of the back darts, you can also take a little out at the center back seam tapering to nothing about 7" below the waist.

Thank you. I have played around with my first fitting and with help of my sewing friends (Facebook groups), I will eliminate the centre-most front dart and use only one. That dart will be transferred to the back because the back hipline is somewhat tight. This makes sense to me because by dividing the hip measurement by 2, I'm giving both front and back hipline the same amount of fabric width when I only need more for my fuller backside. I take pictures of the process and document it on Instagram. When I succeed I will credit you for it. Right now it is still low-key. Thanks again.

I am loving you videos. But I do have a question. Why do we make the front ¼" wider than the back (overall) please? I did see that the darts were slightly wider at the front than back to accommodate the tummy which is higher than the bum; but I thought the bum would balance out the tummy in terms of overall circumference, if not be bigger, so require more at the back in fact. I'd love to have my thoughts straightened out on this one, if you have the time please :)
@christophersartorial7671
5 жыл бұрын
The darts are actually slightly deeper in the back, but can be altered to accomodate a fuller tummy. Women's woven garments have long been made slightly wider across the front. This has traditionally been considered more visually pleasing. As clothing has become less fitted, front and back widths are often drafted equal.

Eliminating all darts from the front of a skirt may only work if the fabric is very supple or stretchy. Don't attempt it with a woven fabric unless you are very slim with a straight figure.
@alinabeaman8252
4 жыл бұрын
Christopher Sartorial thank u for responding! If you have time, would you be able to elaborate? Would it only work for stretchy fabric since it would now have a smaller opening to get over the hips? If someone was more curvy but had a relatively flat stomach would it work to only have back darts and no front ones?
@christophersartorial7671
4 жыл бұрын
@@alinabeaman8252 It would be difficult to eliminate all darts in the front unless the fabric is stretchy. The front dart can be narrowed and shortened though.

so from each side you are taking 2.25 inches away?

You will subtract the amount that the waist is smaller than the hip. First at the front and back darts, then what is left is taken out at the side seam.
@reddssladee
6 жыл бұрын
Ok so if I'm 22 at the hip and 18.25 at the waist, I'm gonna take 3-3/4 from side seams, then from that point I place my front and back darts correct?
@christophersartorial7671

From the 3 3/4", first subtract the width of your darts, then what's left, take from the side seam.
