The 1980s was a turbulent time for anime in America. Previous attempts to Americanize Japanese shows like Mach Go! Go! weren't the most successful, and people weren't really willing to try again until the mid 90s. Enter Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama's smash hit based on Journey To The West, a popular Chinese novel, and it seemed like it was meant to be. Almost. Dragon Ball on it's own wasn't doing too well in the ratings, so Funimation pulled the plug in favor of dubbing it's sequel series, Dragon Ball Z. What would follow would be a phenomenon of toys, games, home media releases all in a similar vein to Pokemania, or the Power Rangers boom several years prior.
