So, i just ran it yesterday with my wife, much inspired by the freedom you added to the story in the book. My wife decided to catch the attention of the manticore and sneak in the house, then the manticore came back and kept banging the door, she took the lady upstairs and waited for the manticore to kick down the door, then she used a rope to jump the window and run to phandalin. I found this to be a very cleaver way to deal with the situation being her first time ever playing DnD, i didnt even had her read any rules, we just played. Keep making those videos please !

These guides have been so helpful! My wife and I recently got into D&D and I’m DMing for her. We both have played rpgs throughout our lives but never tried D&D. Wish we started so much earlier in life. My wife played through Umbrage very similar to your wife, and had similar reactions to her. I was convinced she saw your video as well to prepare for DOIP lol The session started with so much laughter but ended in heartbreak when Cryovain showed up in Phandalin as they were receiving payment. Cryovain killed one of her two sidekicks, Ruby Hammerwhacker in an epic fight that lasted a lot longer than I thought she would (just leveled up to Lvl 2). My wife was near crying because she bonded with her side kick. I’m sure we messed things up but my seeing my wife have so much fun and getting invested in a character(s) in one session makes all the mistakes seem so meaningless. Thanks Bob for this!

I am a 12 yr old dm I have a question(s) 1.Should we always use graph paper to make maps for the players or not even make maps? 2.shoould we make the players go through every area one by one or give them a choice to which area on the map? 3.question 2 is extremely important so it would be amazing if anyone can answer

Hey, thanks for asking! 1. Gridded maps are only necessary if you want to track movement very accurately. I mostly use them for encounters with many enemies/characters, large areas, or interesting terrain. 2. Always, always let the players choose where to go! I recommend checking out my gameplay video for this quest (link in description) for an example. Good luck!!

I played this as my first ever D&D encounter yesterday, and I found a rough map was helpful in making discussions of where to go/ which direction to move/approach things as well as keep a sense of my surroundings. Graph paper specifically for “will I be able to make it to “x” spot?” I could see easily on the grid map.

As a new DM, I ran (am running, as we are on a 1 year hiatus) Lost Mine of Phandelver and this campaign combined, making the Icespire Peak quests available as the party levels up enough to handle them, which means I don't have to modify any encounters to meet the party level. The party had completely finished Phandelver as well as done about 6 or 7 of the Icespire quests by the last time we played. For Umbrage Hill, I role-played Adabra as a bit of a cranky, judgemental person, not liking people in general (hence the reason she lived alone and away from the town), which was awesome as she had a razor sharp wit and belittled the members of the party for some of the stupid decisions they made. I also added in a small quest hook for something she needed (I forget what now, but probably an ingredient for a potion that a party member wanted) but couldn't get herself, which made her and the party reluctantly require each others help.

I will probably make a video on DM resources soon, but for now: a tab with music, a tab with the adventure (if not-homebrew), a tab for notes, and a tab with monsters I expect to use, and a tab to look up spell and class features... is how I used to play. The Dragon of Icespire Peak module includes player map versions online through the free download on D&D Beyond. For my own adventures, I'll usually sketch a map on plain paper for my own reference, sometimes showing the players and letting them know it's not to scale. If I do need a scaled map, I'll sketch it out on graph paper when preparing for the session, but I try not to take this too seriously because it takes me a looooong time to get a map "perfect" and it can sometimes feel restrictive in-game

I don't get why the author decided to let party of freshly built characters stumble into a Manticore. My group knew nothing about the world, so they assumed three adults with crossbows and spells could at least scare away the equivalent of a lion, because predators seek prey, not fights. But rule as written that thing has 68 HP which is at least 5 rounds worth of hitting everything we had, assuming we did max damage every turn. And in turn that thing attacks three times per turn doing enough dmg to kill a person (especially because DnD lets you start with 8hp). So in our case that thing just onehitted two of three adventurers in the first turn and that's it. Can someone explain to me why that is a choice for the very first encounter that new and naive players face?

I really don't like that Manticore can talk. I might swap it out for a Griffon, both to eliminate the persuasion option which doesn't feel natural and to lower the CR in case the party ends up wanting to fight it.
