Personally, I think the straightforward high-fantasy plot about a fated hero destined to kill the dark one is actually kinda charming in how old-fashioned it is. For me, I feel like part of the appeal of the dragon quest series is that it just is it what it is-it sticks to its guns and is just a fun medieval fantasy JRPG romp, and that's just fine.

I would definitely say using the Draconian Quest option that makes enemies stronger is highly suggested if you are familiar with JRPGs. My only real gripe with this game is the low quality midi they used for the music. I mean, the rest of the game is so polished, so well produced, that the music really sticks out like a sore thumb. It's even worse when you find out that there is a fully orchestrated version of the score out there, but the composer refused to allow the producers to put it in for some reason. That is his right, of course, but if you're a composer, wouldn't you want your music to be represented in the best possible way?

Sugiyama is a bastard. And not for the war crime stuff. He's the reason we didn't get the orchestral score. He owns all of DQ's music. And as Jim put it, his soundtrack just isn't memorable. There's way too many callbacks to older themes and previous game scores. And then there's his style in general. The man just flat out has no range in terms of what he composes. Other game composers like Uematsu and Soken (FF14) can cover multiple genre but no -- not Sugiyama. Just this generic semi-classical nonsense. Which used to be fine, but after 30+ years it's overstayed its welcome.

This and Octopath are so refreshing to me because far too often you see RPGs try to reinvent the wheel for the sake of being innovative with their combat systems, but sometimes its nice to just get a car that has normal functioning wheels, it won't blow your mind but it doesn't need too, the wheel is already perfect there is no need to go dicking around with it. DQXI is a really great tribute and call back to the PS2 era of RPGs, it has taken some elements from things that have come out since, its crafting system for one but it does those well and does not ever forget what it was trying to be, It is a traditional RPG and I love it for that

I have yet to play the new DQ but I must say that the story (stories) of Octopath did not warrant the existence of the game. I felt like Ni No Kuni 2 was a real slog and XI is going at quite some lick (about 40 hours in right now). I do always compare it to VIII and I think that we do forget some of the slog in that game, as I think it really slowed down around Arcadia and Orkutsk (although with some nice story moments) and, so far in XI, I've only felt like there's one sloggy moment and that's where I failed to spot the really obvious door to open and just went out into the wilderness, frustrated that I couldn't seem to do anything. I also don't understand why everybody keeps lauding this "new crafting system". Dragon Quest has had a crafting system in both VIII and IX, it's just the whole minigame thing that's kinda new (and doesn't feel cribbed from anything in particular, by my eyes)

why Dragon Quest is most popular RPG in Japan is for this reason, its humble game series, it can be hard but you always grind up and get stronger. Dragon Quest is a perfect example of how to make a series that never radically changes but also never gets old because it continues to build on and refine what it has and doesn't just dump a clone of itself into your lap every single year without fail. IX used internet services to add quests and cosmetics to the game after release, but those are inaccessible now that the services have been shut down. Sylvando is best boi. But come on... The headmaster of L'Académie de Notre-Maître-Des-Médailles is the actual best character of this damn game !!!

@Jim Sterling I also have a very strong love for Dragon Quest 8, the game was so good i put multi-hundreds of hours into it i have two files on my current memory card with 108+ hours EACH, the game holds up and still plays oh so well, im THRILLED to hear you comparing it to an excellent point of reference for me personally! Thanks Jim!

Jim, there's one broader point I think you may have missed. DQ11 was made with Unreal Engine 4, Octopath Traveler was made with Unreal Engine 4. Kingdom Hearts 3 was switched to Unreal Engine 4. The success and quality of Octopath and DQ11 indicate that Squeenix's in-house experience with Unreal Engine is at a pretty good level now. KH3 should turn out great. Hopefully Squeenix gets over the "not-built-here" mentality and tackles bigger projects using using Unreal Engine 4. I do think that not using their own in-house engines for these games has been a great blessing. I hope that UE4 is used for Final Fantasy 16. Using UE4 should help smooth out the development process, maybe leave more time and energy for more cohesive story telling and world-building and a better menu/map interface. With how Octopath and DQ11 turned out (and the Windows port of DQ11 is fantastic!), I think some fears or apprehensions with KH3 can relax just a bit.

It's interesting that you say the characters in the party fall flat, what others giving thoughts on the game had a lot of praise for the same characters.

I was hoping you'd do this one. I fear DQXI will get overshadowed by being released the same week as Spider-Man. Thanks for showing it some love, Jim. I'm loving this game, and I haven't even met Sylvando yet.

My biggest gripe w/ DQ11 is that the 3ds version wasn't localized so the old styled version of this game doesn't exist in the west. It's such a pathetic thing to do but Squeff is Squeff and Squeff hates fans of Dragon Quest.

Why on earth would you want the blatantly inferior version of a game?

I'm still waiting to be engaged by one of these games. Even Joker, even the Omega Force games. Hell I picked up Dragon Quest Heroes 2 expecting it to be like every other Omega Force game, following that formula that was in Hyrule Warriors and, every single other one. But then they built it around fetch quests and that made me check out almost immediately

Wait, because this is a series Jim is already fond of he is willing to readily and completely accept all the game and story mechanics from other games. Yes he acknowledges it but still gives a glowing 'i endorse this one!'.

What a pretty game! Hey. Hey, AAA publishers. Look how distinctive and marketable this art style is. Look how immediately recognizable it makes this franchise. Like, from now on, if I ever see screenshots or footage of this game, and someone's like "What game is that?" I'll take one look at it and go "Dragon Quest XI." And I'll know that because everything isn't a muddy desaturated attempt at "photorealism." Look. LOOK.

With the Vocations system and character customization, DQ9 is also a really good place to start. You can make some really fun builds without even trying to. I should know, since I'm playing blind and I made a powerhouse of a Martial Artist without even trying. Just chaanged classes and got some new skills that work pretty good for him.

I am not sure many characters can replace the character that is Yangus, and the emotion Morrie, or the altruistic king Trode but Sylvando is a close second.
