Greeting from No. VT - Really great job of planning the water flow and smart positioning of your Volvo to do the critical work fast and safely. With you digging and Jerry pushing I was impressed at how fast the drain channel dig moved. This video is a textbook example of how safely draining a pond should be done; both quickly and with the least amount of rework later. Thanks for sharing.

I was surprised to see so many roots of all sizes being exposed in that hard dirt in a 100 yr old pond! Would've thought that they'd long since decomposed; wondered if the amount of clay mixed with the soil preserved them? Very glad to see Jerry uninjured! I'm guessing he's about the same age as me (I'm 64), & back in 2012 I broke my fibula in the ankle (different type of fall), & I now deal with the arthritis that set in the ankle, knee & hip. Great job you guys did, looking forward to the next one. BTW, I learned of your channel when you visited letsdig 18; I had been watching his vids for about 2 weeks prior. After dredging the pond and before filling up the core/gap you excavated, did you consider installing a drain pipe with gate so in the future if it silts up and if you want to dredge it again, you can just open the gate and do not have to do all this excavation again.

I'm dumbfounded by the swimming ponds in your area. Seems they are mostly smelly mud holes, with snappers, catfish, and leaches. As a kid, I would think nothing about building ramps to jump a bike, plow a 4 wheeler through, or skinny dip in. Now it just seems like a good place to catch a rash. My how our perspectives change over time. Hope they get a few years out of that pond before everything gets a chance to poop in it. Are cement ponds outlawed, or are they just as unmanageable?

Now I call that a needle in the haystack. A hole that size was it to turn loose, would be a flood downstream in just a little bit. That was the size of a small culvert, about a sixteen incher and that would of doubled in a hour to a four foot culvert and that is when you toss the kids and cat on the roof and watch the tv go under water! Ya there is someone downstream that said "God, we need some water soon for the garden" and the next thing he said was "not a flood!" LOL. That pond was devoid of oxygen and no fish can live in that. Just a big tad pole hole as it was. Needs to be deeper to get some air going in it I am guessing. It also must of got some predatory fish going in it and that took out the main fish that kept it with air. Those frogs even need some oxygen to breathe. Nice job of calling the leak Mike.
@sassafrasvalley1939
2 жыл бұрын
Morgan, my thoughts exactly on the oxygen in the pond… unless there is a good amount of water flowing in… a little bowl like that ain’t gonna get fresh air. And, the decaying sludge in the bottom will eat up what little does make it in. Carp or catfish can help a little but once it stagnates it’s dead!
@jerrodfelice7891

DP I liked the time lapse of it draining. For some reason I like when the water spills out, but seems like everyone takes a shot from the excavator and that is always moving. Next time you do one of these can you get some more close ups of the water as it comes out? IDK just seems cool. Just my two cents.

Both wrong think about the shape of the pond
@Totalinternalreflection
2 жыл бұрын
@@DirtPerfect sorry to disagree with you but shape has nothing to do with it, the pressure is proportionate to the height of the water column and is the only thing that affects flow except the size of the opening. It’s counter intuitive but the pressure at the bottom of 6’ vertical, 1” diameter tube is the same as the pressure at the bottom of a 6’ deep pond or body of water of any size. The only other factor is viscous drag of the water in contact with surfaces on its way to the opening but that’s not a significant enough factor to be worth worrying about here.
