When you start making art for other people, or you start making things you THINK people will like, like "ah, I should make a summer banger with that new drill sound" that's when you lose your identity, your sound, your drive. You have to always make art about shit you believe in, things you feel in your core. I can tell none of what he goes on about is shit that's real to him, which is funny because he said about Kendrick "I don't listen to guys I don't believe in"

@@venurian Nah, it's deeper than that. Drake is a mulatto who is half Black American and Half Jewish and was raised in Canada around mostly white people and Black people who are just as confused about their identities as he is. He is so used to code switching in real life that it bleeds into his music.
@venurian

@@SmokeyBoat-wk1le I agree with that for sure, it's another thing I believe as well, I just wanted to expand and speak on it from an artist point of view, as it's something I see apply to not only Drake but is also happening to him. I think your thesis that "Drake fell off because he wasn't using his pen anymore and was just copying other people" is interesting -- but consider this! Maybe Drake was NEVER really using his own pen at any time during his rap career? Apparently he had been ripping off artists extremely early on in his career, starting with The Weeknd, which makes me think he never had a creative bone in his body. We only caught on to how much of it was an act when he started copying the linguistic quirks of whatever region he was in. Drake was a child actor, so I truly believe that basically no one has seen his real self besides his mom and close family members (that includes his dad, even.) He's so used to wearing a mask that he does it reflexively now to protect himself and create distance between him and whoever he's getting close to. I could be thinking too much about this, but the idea seemed interesting to me, at least!

@@bobbytropo2314 I don’t think anyone can discredit what they’ve done (less so on Drake but let’s say he’s a talented script reader 👍) both of them to a degree have worked hard for what they’ve gotten. But especially with this newish contract both of them have, the greed has taken full force. Again no one can discredit the early stuff. I feel like we’ve grown against them, they stick to a formula that to their credit works. However that formula can only last so long, at this point for many is it really listening to what they put out? Or is it because they are the most streamed? For example Taylor Swift releasing so many versions of that new album (out of spite and to stay charting) and then you have Drake with so many albums being pumped out. It’s become a point where the art is lost on both of them and they need to take a break from music. I’d actually like them to experiment and try something new for them. I want them to grow to really enjoy the craft and less about the money they’ll make simply putting out an album

Thank me later was the only drake project I fully liked and it makes sense since that was probably his most authentic. Even with take care there are times were you can tell he was chasing a hit but his debut album almost like an autobiography. The hip hop media called him soft for it and as someone who constantly shows us his insecurities that pretty much changed his trajectory. Even with take care he started to take subtle jabs at women that didn't seem prevalent in his earlier works. What makes kanye ye is he can disregard what hip hop media thinks while not letting it affecting how he feels about "the culture ". Tough guy drake was inevitable, he may have admired 808s and heartbreak but he definitely couldn't handle dealing with the backlash that comes with being vulnerable especially in a genre such as hip hop.

When Trey Songz and Nikelus F gave him features and cosigns for Replacement Girls. When he was rapping like Joe Budden. This was before Cash Money. When Drake was Canadian and authentic, his music was decent.His music shifted when rappers constantly dismissed him. That's when he went against Lil Waynes' advice. I wasn't heavy into his music, but the decline was evident. To his credit, he is meeting the contract expectations. But for those who know music; two albums a year is quantity over quality. You are so right. I also don’t think Drake loves or gets women. You said it exactly. The way he airs out and talks about women is gross. His latest albums are not gooood. He is trying to be someone else completely.

I’ve always said “Take Care” is my fave Drake album, the only album I like of his. But I don’t credit him with that album, I credit The Weekend. I haven’t really liked Drake since, but I like The Weekend.

If you're a 90s kid, Drake is the modern Johnny Bravo. Conventionally attractive, well dressed, the preteen ideal "chick magnet". But look at them for more than a minute and they're just creeps.

I've never been a fan of double albums like Scorpion. It always feels like we can edit this down and he was just throwing stuff on there to get a hit. I enjoyed Kendrick album cause it basically the length as GKMC, but generally I'm not a fan. Sza's was cool too cause of how long we waited for her and we had already heard half the album when it came out.

For me, u can never fall off, if u was never on. Ion know if it was on some spiritual ish or not, but I never EVER listened to anything he's ever made. Even though the beef....I only listened to Kendrick's diss songs. I'm not a Kdot fan, but I do listen to him, because he's really apart of the hip hop culture...but my soul wouldn't allow me to listen to ANYTHING Drake related....sorry....not sorry 🤷🏽♂️

I’ve been saying this before the beef because usually it felt like every album he dropped since Scorpion had maybe one hit to it and the rest just filler to run up streams. Feels like his music has been very hollow in that regard.

Drake had a lane, and a niche but refused to stay in it. He tried to position himself as a lyricist despite having ghostwriters; that’s dishonest. The audience eventually wakes up and realise that he doesn’t have a strong identity. Popularity and cultural cache are not the some thing

You got a point. 💯 He fell off after around 2014 for me probably. I haven't even listened to any of his newer albums. He's more for entertainment on social media for me than a real artist. I tuned out probably after Take Care which is really PartyNextDoor and TheWeeknds work. 😮💨I was deep into PartNextDoor and 6lacks music around 2015 -2016/17. I was into Cardib(even tho it took awhile for her to grow on me), Rae Sremmurd, Yung Thug, Migos, Beyonce etc. Drake didnt really catch my interest musically thru those years(except for his hit singles that we were force fed on Instagram like that KeKe song). Not sure why.

To say that it has nothing to do with Kendrick is crazy. Now, whoever you have crowned the winner of that rap battle (and if it’s not Kendrick, I don’t want to talk to you anyway). You cannot say that although some of the things K-Dor said was already said by others Drake needed with. He was the one that MADE YOU LOOK INTO THE SCOPE of who Drake is personally, professionally, and culturally. He’s a conniving and creepy dude and he’s grimey! 25 RICH MEN aren’t mad at you because they’re jealous. He’s the common denominator. He’s also emotional, an CULTURE VULTURE, and now people see him for who he is.
@Top5Troy
Ай бұрын
nah Kendrick made YOU "look into the scope" of Drake that way. Nothing Kendrick said about Drake during the battle was novel. It was information that's been public for years. Drake's musical downturn started way before this Kendrick battle

The songs I like liked the most on Take Care were all written by the Weeknd. The song I liked the most on Scorpion was written by Vory. The songs I liked the most on More Life (the only songs i liked actually) were written by PND. Drake is cool but his own style got receptive and stale for me on Take Me Later. I thought he fixed that until i found out about his ghostwriters.

I agree. To put it simply, it seems like Drake’s strategy was to release a project every year with a great marketing & writing machine behind him. Financially it makes since, because that’s how you “manufacture”. But as far as music, it means that you don’t have time to write amd you always have to catch the next wave. Like you said, his albums have been bad for awhile. I really wanna say since Views. After all that success, he really should’ve sat out for a couple of years, focused more on creating vs acquring. But, as they say, the more money you get shows who you really are.

Drake definitely fell off over the years. His last good overall project was Scorpion. Everything after that in my opinion, he put out whatever he wanted to because he knew his Stans would support it anyway.

Lmao I’m 22 and I can tell you I had a hip hop loving pops who listen to Jeezy, Kendrick, e-40, too short, Scareface, pac, biggie. He never really encouraged me to go back to listen to older music but i also lived with my grandma who listen to a lot of 80-90 Pop and a grandpa who Loved Funk. My aunty listen to a lot of Mary J, Alicia keys, Fantasia. My mom listened to a lot of Boosie. So music beside football was like my therapy so I would listen too personally a lot of older music and quality of albums and all of that. What he said was so true people My age don’t care too much about music to go back and listen to albums they only care too much about what’s popping on the internet and that’s why Drake got away with a lot of the BS albums he put out because like if you were to ask the average 22 year old who they thought was a better artist out of Drake and Kendrick 10 years ago they would have definitely said Drake and I’m not knocking Drake but he’s definitely not touching any of Kendrick actual albums. Drake to me was super average back then and only had a following because he had Wayne Cult like fan base behind him with Wayne Co-sign. I remember as a kid I would always go home and see if Wayne dropped but here comes another over played Drake song on the radio especially in San Diego Hotline bling was played on the radio every other song and was just terrible that song straight 🍑⛽️
