I was a young Mechanical Engineer working on the construction and commissioning of Kiambere Hydro Power Station in late 1980's. It's a beautiful location and we lived in a nice housing camp having mature bungalows and gardens. Saw a Leopard early one morning when a goat had been killed on the road. Verandah looking towards Mount Kenya. Remember Hippo's trying to walk up the water tunnels to the underground power house. There's a series of such dams/power plants a long this 50 mile stretch of Tana River - each one is different topography and dam design. Driving down to Mombasa for Christmas/New Year. Good times!

How come these places are not part of the tourist circuits. Such beauty would attract tourists. Hoiover dam in USA recieves millions of visistors. Its time Kenyan thinkers start expanding their thinking on what constitutes tourist attractions. How about having a resturant on the high banks of the river and just wattch the water flowing

I wish u could get there n see the old colonial tarmac road is the same with rough surface cutting through the dams as u head to embu or machakos either way

This water volume is scaring especially for those of us in down streams. This is a dangerous sign of flood ragging havoc on human settlement nearby, May God help and have mercy upon his people.

These dams help to control the flow downstream, so its helping by not allowing the immediate flood water to hit downstream villages - instead it buffers the immediate heavy run-off from the land, whilst allowing a manageable flow to continue over an extended period of weeks & months.

They should have designed it in such a way the excess flow from rains, run another turbine so that it gives room for diesel generators to be shut down for that period. that could reduce power costs.

what is find disappointing about this infrastructure is that the areas around are so dry and food insecure, why cant govt/county government organize to have the extra spillage pumped to the high area like the hills around to be used by local residents for home use and agriculture instead of allowing flooding in lower regions?

It's true, that area is just dull save a police roadblock in the area with welcoming officers
