Norwegian Constitution Day is the main national holiday, celebrated annually on May 17th. This is the favorite day of the year for all Norwegians! In 2023, we joined the celebration on May 17 in the city of Drammen.
On this day, houses, boats, and cars are decorated with flags and birch twigs, and people in national costumes take to the streets, arrange festive processions, and concerts, and sing songs. The sight is very colorful and impressive. Everyone smiles, congratulates each other on the country's birthday, and hugs!
Every year on May 17, Norwegian schoolchildren, dressed in national clothes and with flags, hold festive processions. Orchestras also take part in the parades. Following the children, adults join the procession - representatives of political, sports, religious, and other organizations.
The parade is completed by "Russ" - a crowd of cheerful youth in colored pants. These are high school graduates and from the end of April to May 17 it is customary for them to empty their piggy banks, rent huge buses with loud music and have fun to the fullest before the final exams!
They make funny business cards with something about themselves or whatever comes to mind!
They are heroes for all young children who once dream of becoming Russ and therefore collect such cards for their collection.
At the end of the official part, the holiday continues, people walk around the city, and eat ice cream and waffles - this is also a kind of tradition. After the concert, which usually takes place on the main square, Norwegians with the whole family go to restaurants or go home for dinner. In general, mass festivities can continue until late at night.
The Norwegian national costume is called Bunad. They are very different, embroidery and style depend on the area in which the person was born. Almost every Norwegian has such a costume, it is an important part of the tradition. Moreover, it is customary to wear a bunad for all very important holidays: weddings, communions, on May 17, for the christening of children, and sometimes even for Easter.
It is worth noting that all costumes are handmade using silver jewelry, so they are expensive! And looking at them on the streets on May 17 is a real pleasure! On the streets of Drammen, we were impressed by the variety of colors and embroidery.
