I like the ambiguity of 'self' in the assignment. Allowing it to be what you think you are, what you think other people see you as, what you wish you were, or many other things, seems like a really liberal amount of freedom while still giving a comfortable container to push against. Great assignment!

I've been overwhelmed by the art assignment lately. I know there is no deadline, but every time I go to do one I think "Ahhh which one to do!" Maybe this one will get to be the one to get me going again. I used to do the Cube test for people a lot as a hobby. Sometimes people didn't want to be a cube but instead asked to be a sphere. That was always fun to see people literally think of themselves outside the box.

Me too, lady! Can you believe there have been FIFTY-FOUR assignments? I would love to see your approach to this one. Also: What is the cube test?

Clear your mind. In your mind picture a desert. In that dessert picture a cube. Describe the cube. What color is it? Where is at in the picture? What's it made out of? Etc. In the same picture, in the dessert, with the cube, picture a ladder. Same questions. Where is it? What does it look like? How many rungs does it have? Etc. Lastly, in the same picture with all the mentioned things, picture a horse. Similar questions. What's it doing? What's it look like? Etc. Bonus question! Picture flowers too if you like. It is a psychological self assessment. The basic answers for the quiz can be found lots of places online. However, some people are better at interpreting than others.

I think you mean desert(?), but emptying my mind and thinking of a cube in a dessert does also have its appeal.

Lol yes. I fixed it now. I always make that mistake, but a dessert in the desert would be great.

As an artist who does many self-portraits, it is nice to have another take on how to accomplish capturing the inner and metaphysical self through exterior and physical means. Assignment soon to commence! Thanks for the inspiration!

I like the idea of calling the people in a piece of art the "characters," and I know it's a small part of the interview and not the main point at all, but it stood out to me. I think it's really interesting

this is actually much more harder than I thought. Our prior knowledge of shapes is not an actual advantage that's an interesting thought.

For the past few days I've been doodling at my desk in the lead-up to this assignment. I kind of thought it would be hard to push outside of known shapes, but when you're left with the idiosyncrasies of your gestures it's almost like making a known shape feels like the harder task. This is one to try!

Another awesome assignment! I really like the history part too. It made me think of a bonus assignment where I could trace my silhouette and then sew in different objects I find around to add texture.

Would love to see both approaches! Maybe begin with your silhouette, and then once you've done that it might free you up to do something else?

Tschabalala's work is really cool! Beautiful color. Also a little bit Matisse-ish, which I guess is relevant to representative shapes and this assignment. I'm gonna start working on this one!

Isn't funny a video that explores the idea of self, expression and symbols conveying meaning, having John with a Ralph Lauren logo on his chest? :)

Why is realism a burden? I understand the assignment and find it interesting, but I don't understand why realism is classified as a burden.
@theartassignment

I think it CAN be a burden, but certainly isn't always. For some, the pressure to depict things as they actually look can not only dissuade them from making art at all, but could also restrain them from making something new, or something that better represents how they think, feel, see the world, etc. Realism is certainly not a burden for all. I'm guessing you don't find it to be. And I think that's great.
