***January 2021 Update***
Hey there! When I created this tutorial, I was unknowingly minimizing and perpetuating disrespectful appropriation of an important Indigenous ritual. This was irresponsible, and I apologize for the harmful impact that this had.
I didn’t do my research on this - and it was an incredibly irresponsible mistake to talk about the tradition of burning sage so frivolously. I’ve since done some reading on this, and wanted to take this opportunity to share some information:
- In the United States, it was illegal for Natives to practice their religion (including use of sage) until the 1978 passing of the American Indian Religious Freedom Act.
- In Canada, from 1876-1951, Indigenous Peoples were banned from all religious and cultural activities - including traditional medicine (and therefore use of sage).
This is incredibly recent history. I’m sorry I wasn’t more mindful of the significance of this.

Today we're painting this smokey smudge stick, using a cool technique for shading. We'll also get into some useful Automatic Selection tricks, and then how to achieve smoke and spark effects!
You can use default Procreate brushes for all of this! :) In the video I use custom brushes, so if you want to follow along exactly, you can get the brushes here:

My equipment:
▲ PAINTING ▲
· iPad Pro (2020) 12.9" : amzn.to/2XNOP36
· Apple Pencil (Gen 2) : amzn.to/368ISiU
· Apple Smart Folio : amzn.to/2WhKZwi
· Screen protector: Until recently, I used a glass screen protector [amzn.to/2JojD2o] for extra protection & because I've never minded the feel of the glass, but I switched to Paperlike this spring. I loved it... until it totally wore out after a month. I'm on the hunt for an alternative. More soon!)
▲ FILMING ▲
++ I love geeking out over filming gear and always wonder what other people are using. So here's my list 🙂
· Sony A7R iii Camera : amzn.to/2JqV0lz
· Sony 24-70mm F2.8 Lens : amzn.to/2qNnwHF
· Sigma 35mm F1.4 Art Lens (Amazing for the soft background): amzn.to/2SKX4tm
· K&F Concept Tripod (amazing tripod, allows me to shoot overhead super easily!) : amzn.to/2Wf7CBu
· DJI Ronin SC Gimbal + Focus Wheel : amzn.to/2AK2VZH
++ I use this gimbal to get my B-roll slow motion shots, which I film entirely by myself. Some I hold the gimbal for, and others, I set it nearby and use the app to control the joystick. I'll even put it on a stool and slide the stool to get a nice glide shot sometimes!
· Yeti Microphone : amzn.to/32RgsI7
· Zoom H1n Handy Recorder Mic : amzn.to/2qKJlaJ
