This brings back so much memory back when I were watching your other videos about the coil and the tentacle. All those knowledge helps me so much when I watch Steve Huston on NMA recently, when he talks about "Gesture & Structure" and how he uses the tube because it's structure AND gesture at the same time, I grab that concept instantly because "OHHH that's Sycra Tentacle".

10:40 the part with "where would the arm be? Where would the cup be?" is really helpful for people like me who studied the basic proportions. So I step back a second, unfocusing the drawing part of my brain, and help myself remember what I actually learned. Positioning the end point and then step back into drawing it out.

Question about the tentacle: I understand how it works in most basic poses, but what if there is a very sharp/strong angle? The example of the foreshortened legs (sitting down) at the end is the only thing I'm having issues understanding. How do you decide on that first tentacle shape when the legs make an (almost) 90 degree turn going from upper to lower leg? Even without foreshortening, how would you draw the tentacle in these kinds of situations? I hope someone can help me out, regardless: Thank you and have a great 2021! :D

The most productive way to learn anything is to start small and add more complexity the more comfortable you get. So with art, the first thing you learn are the fundamentals, which means learn perspective, because you're gonna struggle with everything before you're able to draw decent primitive 3d forms. (it's also important to practice lines, circles, drawing from the shoulder, but that's more like exercises than learning). After that it's best to mix learning theory about anatomy and practicing it right away drawing figures from reference/life. The Issue, however, is that learning the most productive way leads a lot of people to burning out. So you have to figure out how to also make it fun enough for you specifically so you don't get bored or frustrated, which is not something other people can help you with.

@@itch433 thank you for the reply! I've been drawing for most of my life but never the human form/anatomy and its always just feltt extremely daunting to me to even start/attempt it, but thanks, so basically i should get some books on anatomy or something like that? its just something i'v'e never figured out how to even attempt to start learning (the human form that is)
@itch433
3 жыл бұрын
@@TGWTHF there are ton of resources for this, it's up to you to decide which would work best for you. Anatomy books are good if you've got the attention span for it, otherwise there are a lot of videos on the internet, like Proko's YT channel. I recommend learning the base proportions before anything.
@pocketblue

Do NOT get books if you're not interested in them already. Do several serious sessions with gesture drawing, then do a copy of some challenging full body (with foreshortening) and make it look as good/accurate/clean as possible. You are expected to fail and suffer but you should also see progress. At least you will get some answers, something should click.
