Finally,I see someone driving the Torino like it's really in a chase! Even with an expert behind the wheel, the Torino is still a car not for the average joe driving in such a extreme way. At those break-neck speeds, the car will "fish-tail" or "drift" out of control at the turn of the wheel. Recovery takes know-how, and nerves of steel. I know some guys who drove their Torinos too fast and ended up wrapping it up around a tree or a telephone pole. Enjoyed the vid!

Hold on to that thought there. I am a big fan of that show. It came out when I was young and it was THE COOLEST show & car ! Heck I was raised around and drove those "boats" and none of them handled like that one. That was just sad to watch ! Ford w the studio cooperation after the show became a hit, put out 500 special edition Grand Torino's, and yes they sold everyone. I really don't know about that number you said ? I do agree those classic cars should be restored original.

@nailclippers3 Bullshit! I love the Starsky & Hutch Gran Torinos, hate it when someone refers to them as striped tomatoes, AND These guys were lame! I had a 1974 in Germany back in the early '80's and I drove in around Stuttgart and the rest of Germany just like Starsky drove his and I never lost control of mine once! I drove mine routinely 90-120 mph on the autobahn too and never had a problem with it!

@nailclippers3 There is a such thing as RESTORING, so dono't worry about it. I noticed people buy a really nice classic, and HAUL them to the show, I'd rater drive them, what's the point of having a nice vehicle if you don't even fucking use it. Don't let it sit, excersize it and drive it to the show, that's what I'm gonna' do. "But what if you crash?" No different if it was being hauled, crashes are crashes and shit happens.

Because that was a special Roush motor in that one. That guywast to busy laughing and not paying attention to what he was doing. Just watch the show those cars were NEVER THAT hard to drive, and they were stock motor and suspension from the factory 1976 Gran Torino's. The only thing special on them was the custon George Barris paint job.

ford had a maximum of 3.25:1 on big and intermediate coupes,sedans and wagons. the show cars had to been "tuned" with posi's and an agressive ratio for special effects. ford "9"s, ring and pins are easy to swap out any way..

@nailclippers3 That was the whole point of the clip, cars don't have to be worth a mint to be collectible. A few hard corners, on a closed track, with a professional driver, while I watched, staged for the camera didn't hurt my car. The week after Dream car garage updated the suspension completely - see comments somewhere below for details. No harm done, but just maybe someone will consider saving another classic car after watching this episode. We can all hope.

To be honest, driving this car like this teaches a person how to truly learn about driving dynamics. Cars today are so "assisted" that any foolish person thinks they're master hot shoes behind the wheel. Try driving a 300-500hp car with severe understeer and less than adequate braking that weighs 4500lb with tires that are thinner than new compact pickup rubber.

There's a skill to driving these 70's cars hard and some simple suspension upgrades that make all the difference. I know because I owned and drove them in my 20's,very early 1982 onwards. You have to work with the car, not against it, which is what I see here. It may be a 'striped tomato' but it has street cred in spades and everyone will want their photo standing next to it.

Peter and Tom (God rest his soul) has so much fun, they had to do multiple takes because they couldn't stop laughing. The driving was intentional, unfortunately the transmission slipping badly in 2nd, I had hurt it during Drag Week the week before so they had to rely on the cornering fun for the video. Dream Car Garage (LMC) built the C6 and upgraded the suspension for me that winter, handles like a modern car - almost LOL

Well, sure, you can't drive it like THAT every day. I mean, that's exactly how it looked in the show, too! Having had one of these for years, it actually drove really smooth and had a great ride. It's a great cruising car and draws a lot of looks, but it's not good for chasing down cars and doing a lot of cornering. This had me laughing the whole way through because I was like, "Yep, know that feeling!" Great job!

Give the car a break, it was almost 18 feet long, around 7 feet wide, and weighed around 2.5 tons. It was Never Designed as a Sports Car. Aaron Spelling chose the car for it's looks, gave it a special paint job, jacked up rear end, and put wide radial tyres and alloy wheels on it. The rest, was down to special sound effects and tele-visual history. In other words, lighten up, these were just regular every day cars, made up to look hot on the street. Don't confuse fiction with reality.

Gary Dunn Try again. William Blinn the shows creator wanted a green camaro convertible. Was turned down because the studio had a contract with Ford. So He got with George Barriss and spiced up the '75 Gran Torino. That included putting a 461 c.i motor in it and redoing the gears to give it more umph. Dont believe me, buy the show on D.V.D and watch and listen for yourself. That's REALITY !

12loneeagle Yeah, you are right, its been a while since I watched the show. But I do have the entire series on dvd, and yes you are right, I dorecall William Blinn saying they originally wanted a green Chevy, but likeall Aaron Spelling shows back then, they were contracted to using Ford's.I suppose he chose the Torino because the late 60's thru to early 70'sones had a kind of "Muscle Car" pedigree. I still think however, they did agreat job with the 74 - 76 Torino, as used in the show.
@12loneeagle

Gary Dunn They did do a fine job on those cars. The car in the pilot was a '75. The '76 hadn't been, as far as I can find out, introduced yet. The '74 had a big fixed window beside the little roll up door glass on each side of the car. Hard to miss. I do watch the show regularly on D.V.D it is refreshing compared to what is on these days.

You are too funny, 74-76 Torinos are not collector cars. Most people who own those years do so for sentimental reasons, or because they like Starsky and Hutch cars. I say anyone who restores or preserves any classic car regardless of the paint is doing a good thing.

There are Suspension Mods to make these monsters handle a lot better. You've got to remember, between OPEC, the Insurance Mafia and the Washington Tree Humpers, Manufacturers hands were tied. They had to lose Horse Power to cut Exhaust Emissions. Sure, they could've made the cars handle better, but they went for Ride Comfort instead. How many people have actually see the Vacuum Line Schematic for any car built back before EFI? I have. Holy Carbureted Crap, they're Dizzying. Not to mention all of the other crap they had to bolt on.
