I agree the film runs out of steam, but for different reasons than most people are saying. Rather than the film being a one-joke movie or repetitive, I think the trouble is that they try too hard not to be a one-joke movie. So they expand into other areas, but the elements don't quite coalesce. Cage was great playing Cage, as usual. He's got charisma for sure.

This has got the funniest seduction scene ever. The movie is good, Nicholas Cage is excellent but the whole thing runs out of steam. It's not entirely successful as a satire on the dichotomous nature of fame and it's not entirely successful as a portrait of a middle-aged man who realises his life has not amounted to very much. He is constantly frustrated but lacks the cajones to do anything about it. The movie doesn't know where to take the story and give it a satisfactory ending.

Fantastic movie, one of the best in recent memory! Cage was simply brilliant, the dialogue felt realistic yet was always surprising. This was a trippy, smart, beautiful, and hilarious cinematic rollercoaster ride. The photography, sound design, and editing (oh my god, the EDITING!) were masterfully done. The movie had me captivated and in stitches right up the end, as I was really rooting for Paul, while enjoying a bit of guilty schadenfreude. And I have to say, I love me a good ambiguous ending. I’ve found that the ending is often the least important aspect of many stories, and it’s the part that I usually forget. Well, I won’t forget this one anytime soon.

I liked this movie a lot. I was a little taken out of things when they made that strange shift into the commercialization of dream walking with that bracelet. But, I suppose that did actually make a kind of sense, given the movie's arc. I thought the way the dreams were imagined for each person was quite good, and the cast was terrific. Cage was excellent. The need for approval was just dripping off of his every line of dialogue. That neediness. Chalk another performance up for the Cage-aissance. The other day someone said to me that Cage had turned into Eric Roberts, making all of these shitty direct to VOD movies. I told them they weren't paying attention. Anyway, I really liked this movie!

I don't recall the movie giving any explanation on the why people were having dreams about him. Although I was and am curious, I'm actually okay with them not explaining it. My perception was that the why was irrelevant and that the movie wanted to focus more on the psychology of how these dreams were affecting society and how his fame that he craved was negatively impacting his life.

I disagree that Cage's character was "aggressively bland" he's an actively terrible person who royally fucks up his opportunity. Like when he's doing the apology and cries "Aren't I the real victim here?!" But despite the character's many flaws, I did feel sympathy for him. I agree the film runs out of ideas when it turns into Black Mirror which I thought was unnecessary.

The moral of the story is that evolutionary psychologists are useless at best and dangerously deranged at worst. In all seriousness, the movie is better and more interesting than it gets credit for. Is it all a dream? Is the assault on Molly real? When Paul can’t turn off the light, is that an indication that he is dreaming?

There really is no such thing as an original story. As a huge advocate of Jungian psychology, you learn that every story is based on certain archetypes. And now with a 100 years of film history, most cinema stories have been mined at one point or another. All that to say I find the criticism that a movie is unoriginal if it reminds you of something else to be cheap and lazy critiquing. I think it's more important to discern how it's different and if the filmmakers are capable of imbuing a cliched story with a personal touch which is really what makes a film original in my mind.

The character he plays reminds me - far too much - of a Woody Allan character: a whining, schmuck, nebbish. His upwards inflexion at the end of every sentence very quickly grated on me. Out of touch with his world. I would seriously question how such a "character" could make a tenured, full professor. Anywhere. Unless that was the joke of how irrelevant he had become. The second half descended into very unpleasant farce, starting with the actual sexual encounter with the 20 year old woman in her apartment. I was tempted to walk out half way through - and wished I had.
