I’m a soundguy from Boston. Before cv-19 Mike would always come out to support his friends bands when they played local clubs and he’d often sit in and do a solo. We hung out quite a bit and I can say he’s not just an absolutely amazing drummer, but a great human being as well!

I hear the comment that MM is "soulless" and "Mechanical" "Boring". I feel compelled to point out how rigid this music is. It is similar to classical music in that there is no variation. Note for note performances every night which lends itself to boring. For the players as well as the audience. Though I think the audience is there for just that experience. I am not that familiar with Mike Portnoy but seeing this band I get a sense that he is another technical monster. I don't find this solo very inspiring preferring more musical/melodic guys like Vinnie, Rod Morgenstein, Chris Coleman even Toss Panos. But MM is an enormous talent and has incredible technique and facility.
@flacidhouse350
5 жыл бұрын
The music isn't that way with Portnoy behind the kit. Portnoy is a technical monster, but unlike most technical monsters he maintains the ability to convey emotion, project power through his playing, and he doesn't perform to a click track which is like fucking to a stopwatch.

He does things that are incredibily difficult. He is technically a genius, You may say that the way he plays is not so spectacular, so visual but he is GREAT. Othe thing: The way his kit is settled is odd. Cymbals too high and the small drums so high he has to raise his arms... The drums not in a size order from left to right but to be played alternatively with each arm.... it´s strange and only works for him. But it works. It does because he is so fast with each hand that he doesn´t need to use both hands to do a fast scale up the drums.

pros and cons of of mangini's playing: (only reply if you actually bothered reading this comment) pros: really energetic and fun to watch on stage great pocket altogether extremely technically skilled cons: his parts aren't as dynamic as portnoy's (but that's compared to portnoy, so that's not saying much) doesn't have the same "feel" as portnoy (but that's just an excuse people make to hate on mangini) his parts are far more basic than portnoy's (but again, not saying much) in conclusion, two of the three cons i listed were to do with writing, which mangini had no part in. So i bet if mangini did more writing, we'd get an album far better than the crapstonishing. and also, this is all in relation to mike portnoy, one of the greatest drummers OF ALL TIME. You can't just ask someone to replace one of the greatest drummers of all time and expect anything nearly as good. but nevertheless, DT got something that i'd say was nearly as good as portnoy.

He still have to play 11-15 songs in a single concert and those songs are not easy, those are Dream Theater songs. And Mangini ain't typical of a showman, but doesn't mean he can't do a big drum fill solo cause that is a fuckin bullshit. He's just being smart to not listening to all portnoy's fanbots booing him as always cause that's the only way they're good at

It's funny. Everyone complained about him being "robotic" (even though that's really just called being precise) yet during the live shows no of those people had anything to say 🤔 hmmmm what could this possibly mean?

What most people don't understand is that Mangini's excellence relies 90% on his physical skills. His arms, feet and hands move incredibly fast and this fact puts him, indeed, in the position of one of the greatest drummers around. However, as he gets older, he will find himself unable to do these cool stuff and will be forced to use his creativity to do something that still sounds interesting, but a million notes shorter and, considering what he has done so far with DT, I don't think anything incredible is going to happen.

"His arms, feet and hands move incredibly fast and this fact puts him, indeed, in the position of one of the greatest drummers around" You know what, you are correct, screw John Bohnam, Baker, Jojo, Portnoy. Fast = Good.
