Well we age so everything becomes more difficult to do, period. You can call it bad and painfull and what not, but you gotta realize that this man has been singing for about 30 years. Things change. If you don't like it, don't listen to it anymore. You can also continue listening and have some respect for the man who made it big time globally and is doing his best to give the audience a great time. I am sure there will be a time when James realizes that he cannot do this anymore. Maybe that will be the day he either stops or continues to sing songs like e.g. 'Invisible monster', where they keys don't go that high. Remember, this is a song from 1992, where James was about 20-25 years old.

I love James and will defend him as still being a great singer with the right songs. However I think the older stuff, especially the first 2 albums, is way out of his reach these days (even when tuned half a step down). I get Pull Me Under is the "Greatest Hit", but man they really dont need to play it anymore. Sub this out with something from Distance Over Time, Train of Thought or even Self Titled and I think it would work so much better. Edit: Saw them live in manchester last night and James sounded pretty good, much better than in this video. Think James maybe just needs longer vocal rest between shows than he's been getting.

@@petrucci973 he sure did, but that was in 1994. The majority of Dream Theater's career has been post vocal chord rupture. These days it's just general wear and tear. I am a huge fan of James Labrie, and thanks to him I became interested in singing as such. For me, his career already spoke for itself. Although I would be lying if I say that it sounds just as good as before or that it sounds very good, however it is not something to attack it so much. He had vocal problems, he had a complicated career in which he sang badly at many concerts, he had someone teach him incorrect vocal technique that he still maintains to this day, and he is singing the song in the same key as when it came out but now more than 20 years later. What James needs is to correct his vocal technique, and by improving that aspect he will be able to stay more in Dream theater, and he would stop sounding drowned and pushed. Yes, it seems strange to me that he doesn't do it, but doing it would be the best solution for him and for the band.

tell that to ella fitzgerald, she sang gracefully her entire career. James did it wrong, he screwed his own vocal chords because of technique issues, and continued to sing although he was told he should stop singing until vocal cords were totally healed… so that's what you get when you're stubborn, I couldn't go to a DT show anymore and hear James singing like that, it's awful. John Mayer had some issue with vocal chords and he isolated himself while healing his vocal chords. Then you need to re educate some of the technique principles of singing to avoid repeating the same injury all over again… so that's what happened, and that's the price of that.

Or continue as an instrumental band, which I wish they would have the whole time. Those vocals have always turned me off, even when he could do it.

Notice how nervously John is moving the trembar up and down during the intro. The whole concept of the trembar in intro is playing with subtle movements in order to create a wider detuned sound with the delay. That whole sound is gone. I guess John’s style has changed as well. Either that or he’s just becoming lazy. And LaBrie…he just HAS to retire. I think the rest of them are cringing just as hard but money is money.

It's hard to keep such a powerful headvoice alive through the years. Maybe James needs a vocal coach to expand in deeper tunings. This is so sad to hear. 😢

Did LaBrie ever got vocal training? I know so many vocalist how evolved over 30 years and where you see on stage how they prioritize technique nowadays over pressing in the past.

Wow. Watching this kinda makes me sad. LaBrie used to be such a beast. It pains me to say so, but I think it’s time for the band to consider getting a new vocalist. This is just painful to hear.

Shocked by the vocals. That’s actually embarrassing. To those blaming it on age, I disagree. I saw King Diamond shortly before the pandemic. I’m guessing he was around 64 or so at the time. He was a lifelong heavy smoker until he had a heart attack a number of years back. Long story short, his voice sounded identical to albums he recorded 30 plus years ago. He was absolutely flawless and his vocal range goes from deep growls to the highest of falsettos. You have to take care of your voice, practice proper technique and warm up properly. Gosh James ruined this song. It sounds like Kermit the Frog at some points.

Good, GOD. I've never been a LaBrie hater but holy god damn shit, he sounds shockingly bad. It's truly getting worse and worse. I know vocal fatigue is a thing so maybe that's taking more of a toll than I realize, but like, I almost can't fathom singing this out of tune. I feel like I couldn't sing this badly if I tried. It seriously sounds like he has the yips for vocal intonation or something lol.

Christ. I didn't think Vince Neil had competition in the Bad Vocalist category.
