Undertaken on the evening of Sunday, the 5th January, 2020, somewhere in Brisbane, Australia.
Video recorded on a Samsung Galaxy 9+ phone.
Vocal audio recorded into Cubase Pro 10 with a cheap AKG microphone, and all this after spending December in Melbourne singing into a Neumann U67, haha!... More to come on that later ;)
Recorded two full first-take lead vocal parts, which seemed appropriate given the original is definitely double-tracked. Did the harmony parts separately. Added reverb and compression, and tweaked the EQs (though I reckon I took too much bass out). No other audio plugins utilised, no tuning whatsoever! If you think I'm full of shit, I'll put up a version with the Samsung phone audio, either a cappella or with a softer backing track. Either way, most of you wonderful prog nerds can pick out Autotuned/Melodyned parts at a million paces nowadays, so I wouldn't dare :)
If you wanna skip the intro and get straight onto hearing this oddball have a crack at it, go to roughly the 2:00 mark (though given it's a great song, you should listen to the whole thing, imo lol!).
If you rate it, comment here about other D.T. songs you reckon you'd like to hear me cover, as well as songs by other bands in the same realm of prog (or late 80's/early 90's Aussie rock), and I'll see what I can come up with!
If you don't rate it, give me your funniest comment/roast as to why. I don't expect everyone to love this rendition, and I sincerely hope for a multitude of reactions :)
My love of Dream Theater began in early 2000, when I had just started a Bachelor of Music at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. Ash MacLean and Richard Dupuy, two excellent guitarists and lovely dudes, showed me "Images and Words" and "Awake" inside the second week of the course; that exposure reshaped my approach to music, guitar playing and singing. I picked up "A Change of Seasons", "Falling Into Infinity", and eventually "When Dream and Day Unite", before getting stuck into "Scenes From A Memory". I think my girlfriend dumped me soon after ;)
I reckon I must have also pissed off or confused a lot of my classmates, getting off my bicycle while blasting my Discman and singing karaoke with the great James Labrie, as well as with Andre Matos (of ANGRA, R.I.P.), Russell Allen (SYMPHONY X), and, not too long after, Daniel Gildenlöw (PAIN OF SALVATION), not to mention my lifelong love of John Farnham persisting. Just between you and me, I reckon I'm still pissing the neighbours off with all of that same material, as well as my own, haha!
That's enough writing crap; you should be listening by now. See you on the other side!
