Working with a state institution means clue hunting and fact finding, as the collection provides an education in both broad histories and the nitty gritty of how people really lived - maternity allowances, growth pleats, buttons for diaper access. Like many of us, she romanticizes the clothing of the Victorian era, loves the hidden stories within history, and gets lost in the details. In addition to speaking about some beautiful and fascinating collection items, Kemper speaks about "Our Stories, Our Service: Kentucky Women’s Veterans," an exhibition that explores how women’s military uniforms affected their service and influenced changes in dress.

Our cocktail for the evening: Mint Julep
This cocktail is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, and happens to have a liquor the state is quite well known for - bourbon. A refreshing iced drink, the mint julep is perfect for August as well!
Ingredients:
4 to 5 mint sprigs, leaves only
2 sugar cubes, or 1/2 ounce simple syrup
2 1/2 ounces bourbon whiskey
Mint sprig, for garnish
Place the mint leaves and sugar or simple syrup into a julep cup, collins glass, or double old-fashioned glass. Muddle well to dissolve the sugar and release the oil and aroma of the mint.
Add the bourbon. Fill the glass with crushed ice and stir well until the glass becomes frosty. Garnish with a mint sprig.
Non-alcoholic version: Mint Lemonade
Ingredients (makes a pitcher of 8):
1 ½ cups lemon juice
7 cups water
1 cup of sugar
1 cup mint leaves
ice for serving
Juice the lemons. Add the lemon juice to a pitcher with 6 cups cold water.
In a blender, combine the sugar, mint leaves and 1 cup warm water. Blend until fully combined.
Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl. Then strain it back through the strainer into the pitcher with the lemon juice. (Double straining helps to remove sediment that would otherwise form at the top of the liquid.)
Add ice to the pitcher. Garnish each glass with a sprig of fresh mint, to get the most of the mint flavor. Serve immediately or store refrigerated for up to 3 days.
