Here's a step-by-step guide to help you achieve a fresh new look:
1. Gather Supplies:
- Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
- Tack cloth or damp cloth
- Paintbrush or foam brush
- Tan wash paint (either store-bought or homemade)
- Furniture striper
- Mineral sprite
- Sealer
2. Prepare the Dresser:
- Remove any hardware
- Clean the dresser thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove any dirt, dust, or grime. (optional)
- Remove the old finished. I started by using chemical striper and i sand the entire dresser. ( I stared with a high-grit sand paper and i work my way down to fine-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.
- Wipe down the dresser with a tack cloth or damp cloth to remove any sanding residue.
3. Apply the Tan Wash:
- Stir or shake the tan wash paint thoroughly to ensure it's well mixed. (I used 15%paint 85% water)
- Using a paintbrush or foam brush, apply a thin layer of tan wash paint to the dresser, working in small sections, wipe off the excess.
- Allow the first coat to dry completely. Depending on the desired intensity of the color, you may need to apply multiple coats, allowing each coat to dry in between.
4. Protect the Finish
- Once the tan wash is dry and you're satisfied with the appearance, you can seal the finish with a clear sealer or wax to protect it from scratches and wear.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying the sealer or wax, and allow it to dry completely before reattaching hardware.
5. Reattach Hardware:
- Once the dresser is completely dry and any protective finish has been applied, reattach the hardware such as knobs or handles.
