Elder scene/screamo's lived and died by the sharpie/paint pen. We'd make our own "band" shirts, our own tights with patterns, and we'd do our nails and (sometimes) a bit of our makeup with them. I don't know a single person from the peak of scene-era fashion that bought hollister stuff, but I know that started popping up as we got older and had to dress like normal people again. Also, anything is a choker if you're brave enough. We used to braid shit like shoe strings and ribbon to make them and hair bows. a big thing was making thumb holes in long sleeved clothing too. Never got into the beads deal but in my area we had more leather and lace stuff with chunky accessories. I adore that the fashion is coming back.

@@TombNGloom get a cheap pack of solid color or striped tights and either distress them for the ripped look, or some people I knew would use paints or markers/sharpies to stain them and create patterns (worked best with white tights). those going the extra mile would dip dye or paint them with cheap Rit dye. Honestly though, our skinny jeans were so tight that there was rarely room for skin, much less tights lmao

31YO former broke sceney here - they didn’t make low-rise skinny jeans at the time and most peeps were too scared of having their credit card info stolen to order from one of the few online stores. Soo scenies and punks would often sew the bottom of their jeans to make them skin tight. If you hand-sew jeans with regular thread tho, they’ll rip, so you can use dental floss. It’s way stabler and you can get it in neon green! We would also wear those little knock-off keds slip-ons from K-mart. Not sure if they still exist but those were definitely popular and only cost a couple dollars. Also, if you can’t afford a mesh top to layer under your t-shirts, you can cut the crotch out of black tights and stick your head through that hole and then your arms through the legs. I think you hit the nail on the head with the DIY thing. For the most part we were making our own alternative versions of the hideous stuff available at y2k big box stores. Anyways see y’all on MySpace

I'm actually a goth 😳, but I notice that emo and scene clothing seems a lot more practical a lot of the time, especially at my job, and recently I've just gotten very lazy with how I dress. Instead of struggling to find black clothes to go together, looking old fashioned, and dressing inappropriately for the weather, I can pair some black with colorful clothes and I love wearing tight shirts and skinny jeans and diying. I at least manage to find colorful fishnets and hair extension clips at party city for really cheap

Great options. I think the difference between scene kids in the 00s vs scene kids now is the internet influence on fashion. Back then, we just made things up as we went. There wasn't necessarily a specific store or brand that we went to for clothes.

I am turning 30 this year. And yes, you have the look down to a T. 😍 One thing: perhaps this was a Salt Lake thing, but back in the day, Hollister was extremely popular among the preppy kids. In more modern terms, the alternative kids thought that Hollister (and its fellow summer-in-Cali-stereotype stores) was only for "basic" girls. That being said there was a lot of bleed through and crossover in fashion at the time. My local scene was definitely inspired by Japanese punk and street-style. We were more like Anime-inspired-emo-pixie-vampires. Also, in retrospect the "mainstream" girls had the same silhouettes as the"freaks," just a different color pallet and brand logo.

this comment is old, but I live in Europe too and there's an online store similar to hot topic called emp. I buy a lot from there, and even though most of the stuff they have there is more emo/goth/metalhead you can find some things that could definitely be scene! for example they sell a lot of band merch, I bought a pair of black and white striped stockings there, they have knee high shoes similar to converse... etc.The only problem is that it can be expensive sometimes and the shipping is long. I also customize or make a lot of my clothes. I painted a checkered pattern on my converse and added colored shoelaces and got a little of compliments on them! I also make all of my kandi (I use perler beads but it works anyway). I bought a pair of black skinny jeans (they're on a lot of regular clothing stores) and ripped them by myself. Also you can get fishnet stockings pretty much anyway Hope this helped! 🖤

Sooo cool to see scene coming back! As someone born in late 1996, when scene fashion was a thing in the 2000s, I was a bit too young to participate in it, but I always admired it from afar and the outfits are so colourful and creative. I love the black/bright colour contrast and the mix of dark and cutesy elements. Not sure if I personally would do the typical scene haircut or dye it, but I love the clothing and accessories, so I'm glad to see it coming back!

It’s cool seeing emo style today!! I love the style still but am more into Lolita fashion now. When I was a teenager tho I was very much wearing the emo aesthetic. Back in the day it was sort of slim pickings and my wardrobe was small.

wow! this is such a throwback. I am really sad that I got rid of so much of my stuff. I would live in the beauty supply store for cheap stuff. my hot pink studded belt lasted for years until it fell apart. another cheap accessory is the rubber bracelets that come in 100 ct. packs. I used to stack those, and you could get them in a bunch of colors.

I was more into punk, but anyone remember when we used to sew our pants into skinny jeans? I used to have to do it all the time because not that many stores were selling skinny jeans yet lmao
