I just got the 2002 edition on eBay for $15. It was interesting to see classical definitions and rules that I remembered from discarded guides printed in the early 1970s (based on the rules a decade of more earlier), given to me then as a midshipman. I have since been told that I misremembered them, e.g., definition of semi-formal. After all, it was 50 years ago. Then there they were, even indexed.

The disciple has become the master. Over the years, Ash has followed a sacred path of style & personal development after learning the ropes. FYI, the Rolling Stones drummer, Charlie Watts purchased Edward VIII's suits at a Sotheby's auction in Paris (and Wore Them!!)

Charlie always was super dapper. A sad loss.

My favorite band in high school, I was always taken back by Charlie Watts appearance, he was dressed like a banker instead of a rock star! Charlie got alot out of that clean, small drum set. I did not know about his buying Edward VIII's suits. Sad to not have him around anymore!

I will be adding this book. I only have 3 books in my style journey. All 3 are by Hugo Jacomet, and in one of his videos he recommends this book you are reviewing.

Good video, Ash. Thanks. I have quite a collection of 'men's style' books. A few suggestions for you to consider: James Sherwood - 'The Perfect Gentleman' Bernhard Roetzel - 'Gentleman' Eric Musgrave - 'Sharp Suits' G. Bruce Boyer - 'True Style' All available either new or used on Amazon and other booksellers.

Second the mention of 'Gentleman' above, without having seen the Flusser book, it may be the case that Roetzel has a more European eye ? Of course, the best tip wardrobe wise would be to Never Ever let the lady in your life have too much influence in its filling, and you'll be sure to avoid the conveyor belt of 'Fashion' :D

HA - you have hit the nail on the head there sir. My wife thinks I dress somewhat eccentrically, however, as I frequently point out to her, my wardrobe has barely changed in 5-years - hers, on the other hand, is in a constant state of flux. Ash

Hello Ash Love your content. This is $47 on Amazon Prime from the USA. I was about to order, but I found "Clothes and the Man" from the same author for $14 and purchased it. Let's see, arrives in 2 days. Peter

Thanks Ash. I was interested in this book and pleased to see your review. As usual you did a through and incisive review. Great stuff. I ordered it from a used book retailer , saved some money, and kept a book out of the landfill. Cheers

If you can find a copy, I recommend NEW DRESS FOR SUCCESS by John T Molloy
@michaelblazin4093
Ай бұрын
@@TheChapsGuide I had the book when it came out. It is a very by the numbers handbook. You need X suits, Y sport coats, tie these knots, wear these shoes, don’t do x, y, and z plus anecdotes about the importance of proper attire. Molloy and his peers did help bring back some rigor to business.clothing with the results that we saw in the 80s. The difference between then and now was in the 1980s a large core of business people remained committed to suits, sport coats and ties throughout the 70s. The fashions were not classic, but Molloy and company did not have to convince them to wear suits, just wear better suits. Also women entering the workforce were big proponents of suits because they wanted to be taken seriously. In the 2020s the re-education effort has to teach people to walk again before showing people how to run..
