I remember as a young boy my great grandfather would tell me stories about when he grew up In New York and he always lived near the water level route that the 20th century limited would take and everytime it would pass by he would always wave at the engineer and firemen and they would always wave back at him oh boy he also told me that when ever a niagra or a mowhawk would pass by he would always pull his hand up and down signaling them to whistle at him and they always did and even though he moved to Texas in the 50s he would always go back to New York in the summer watching them go by (rest in peace papa. That's what I called him)

+Rebel9668 The then president of the New York Central Railroad is alleged to have said that he didn't want his company to be remembered for outdated technology and as such wanted all of the steam fleet scrapped.

SORRY NOT TRUE the simple fact supported by history is anyone could have had any of the scrapped locomotives for the price of scrap, no one stepped up, even for 5200 or 5344. The NYC survivors are known, and survive because they were purchased. The two TH&B Hudsons even found no home after their short use and you might think by then someone would have got the idea to save one. It's known employees wanted to save examples but the railroad was out of cash - That's it.

With Peppercorn A1 Tornado having run so many miles since it's completion in 2009, it needed and receive a 400,000 pound sterling restoration. The Brits are now building multiple new replacement locomotives for others also lost. How about us Americans try that with a HUDSON? SOMEONE GO AND GET BILL GATES INTERESTED!

I am very skeptical that a new PRR T-1 would ever be built. There's no longer a "General Steel" in St. Louis that could do the cast steel bed (frame) with four integral cylinders. That would mean it would not have the same strength as one of the originals which in view makes the entire exercise moot. Steam locomotives by their inherent design tear themselves apart in ordinary operation. The legal aspects/ ramifications of that once again render the exercise moot. Better choice would be a J1d or e. J3a's also had the same one piece cast locomotive bed and cylinders. At least J1e 5344 had the Dreyfus style streamlining applied for a time.

I wouldn't blame him for this. He tried to sell the Hudsons at scrap price, but no one wanted to buy them, I heard a railroad almost bought one, they just needed a thousand dollars, and the NYC needed money (it went down anyways)

Anyone have any idea where the shot at 0:20 is? Based on the mountains, it looks to be about just south of Peekskill but I can't find any information on the factory. Edit Nevermind, I was able to find it pretty quickly. It looks like it may be the Standard Brands Plant at Charles Point.

first query, that some sort of promtional film?, looked like 16mm, and a good batch of paceing shots, and a really good peice on the Commodore. yah cryin' shame NYC was pretty much FUBAR at the end, would be just tooo sweet to get a Dreyfuss deseign back on the rails, those suckers could MOVE on the water level route, those high drivers were not worth a popcorn fart in a high wind on hills though.

Many passed through Buffalo but none through Jamestown. The Dreyfuss Hudsons were infamous for traveling the mainline only, which spanned from NYC to Chicago. Buffalo just so happened to be on the main.
@b3j8
2 жыл бұрын
@@mattjohnston7686 The J's were more powerful by far. They routinely ran at the century mark where track and topography allowed it. The Hudsons were slippery w/a heavy train, but could easily hit over 100 running late.

1:40 what is that streamlined steam engine, it is not the commodore Vanderbilt because it is shorter and only has 4 drive wheels, not the 6 that the dreyfuss or the commodore have Edit: nvm I see it has 6, my bad, but i can tell it is not the Vanderbilt because the streamlining is different

It was a one off streamliner by the NYC known as the Mercury. Another J-type hudson with special streamlining like Commodore Vanderbilt and the Empire State Express.

Joe Inacio Actually, the Mercury Locomotives were K5b Class locomotives. 4915 and 4917 were given the Mercury shroud. Although, a J3a Dreyfuss Hudson did haul the Mercury Express at the beginning of the train’s run.
