Follow us as we install twin tube coil overs on ANY classic car build - THE RIGHT WAY!
This is (Part 2: Front Suspension Fabrication) on our budget road race car build, a 1972 BMW E10 2002.
In this Episode of our Budget BMW Build, and we are tearing into the nitty-gritty fab work to make the front suspension off of our E46 325i fit onto our 1976 E10 project base! If you like welding, grinding, plasma cutting, and "laser" beams, this episode is for you!
For decades, the standard way to fit modern coilovers on classic cars has been the tried-and-true "spindle cut" method, where you chop the spindles off right above the hub assembly and weld a new coilover to the ~50 year old spindles on your classic car project. This is not ideal for a myriad of reasons, including safety and performance. This process we show allows the installation and precision alignment of a new subframe, custom top hats with adjustable camber and caster, and wheelbase adjustment. In our project, we are kicking the front axle centerline forward 3/4". We are doing this for 2 reasons:
1. Firewall tire clearance for our larger tires.
2. Wheelbase increase for stability and better matching the Ackermann design intent from the E46 suspension donor.
