Had this on my watch list for quite a while. Finally got around to watching it this morning and it was a very good Sci-Fi movie. Probably one of the better ones I've seen in a while.

The ending still haunts me. It was beautiful but unsettling too. I got the same feeling with the ending of the Six feet under HBO show.

Do you know it is based on a collection of poems written in the 1950s by Harry Martinson?

This movie is so bleak and depressing. Idk what was worse the baby scene or the probe realization.

I rememebr checking this out on HBO because the poster reminded me of Death in Space (not too dissimilar in theme btw) and was not disappointed with the find

Thanks for the review. Seems relevant to mention where the ship ended up in the last shot. I was trying to decide if that was meant to be a hopeful ending.

I think it definitely was a hopeful ending. They could have chosen any other color for that planet, and they chose green and blue. The same colors that dominate the nostalgic visions of Earth in this film. Also, the second to last chapter was titled "The Sarcophagus". The passengers refer to the ship as a sarcophagus throughout the film, but these title cards break the fourth wall, so they may reflect the world of the film instead of the thoughts going through the characters' minds. There is evidence for this in the title card "The Spear," which showed onscreen well before any other hint apparent to the characters that the metal rod was useless and thus would break morale. If the Spear titlecard hinted at a future event, then The Sarcophagus title hints at a future event as well- that being when the ship is reduced to a sarcophagus floating through space. But why sarcophagus and not some other word like grave? I think because a sarcophagus is eventually unearthed and opened.

@@JeanEDeaux As in, what was the viewer supposed to feel when the ghost ship made it to the earth-like planet.

You could see it as if the human dna on the ship has managed to survive, it could seed the planet with life when the ship crashes into it. I dunno.

@@clutch2827 I don't think that's how DNA really works lol but yes their biological material could be a part of some life form after crashing into the planet. Which seems "hopeful" in some way, idk

A think a lot of the minor plot holes/inconsistencies makes more sense if we think of the ship as less mayflower and more costa concordia that got repurposed at the last minute.

What plot holes/inconsistencies??
@MajesticOak
3 ай бұрын
@@JeanEDeaux Pretty sure some of the other comments touched on them but things like the lack of comms with earth & mars, lack of any attempts of rescue from earth & mars, the potential of their artificial gravity system, etc. Again, none of that matters or detracts from the story because the main focus is on the human flaws that lead to the situation (and how they cope) with parallels to earth's seafaring history (ship disappearances and whatnot).

They couldn’t ever really adjust to their “new world” because they had a gaddamn captain who REPEATEDLY kept giving them false hope. To me, he was the villain of the damn movie. Ugh 🤦♂️

kool concept but I just can't find it believeabe that with the world dying humanity would waste time and effort in creating a mega cruise ship like entertainment environment. I can believe MIMA, but not all the creature comforts. maybe the bar and some play area for kids and a gym. Just the bare essentials and prioritize energy, food, and all major survival necessities. It was like a Passengers but with cults, orgies, and an AI that turns into Marvin from hitchhikers guide to the galaxy 😂. depressing AF

I think the uprising that you expected just didn't happen because for one, they were a small-ish community where basically everyone knew everyone, especially after a few years of self offings. And secondly because it wouldn't have added too much to the main characters' stories. They were just in to experience the ride, as most of us do in life.
